Chapter 7 - The Mastermind in Silk

The top floor of the Valente Tower on Michigan Avenue offered a panoramic, breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline and the dark expanses of Lake Michigan. The sun was setting, painting the executive boardroom in deep shades of crimson and violet.
Roman sat at the massive glass conference table, a fountain pen in his hand, reviewing a thick stack of corporate acquisition documents.
Sitting across from him was Julian Vance—a distinguished, silver-haired man of fifty-eight, wearing a three-piece charcoal suit, sipping a double espresso from a fine porcelain cup.
"Everything is in order, Roman," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying the calm, reassuring tone that had guided the Valente family’s legal empire for a decade and a half. "Once you sign these final three deeds, the Rossi family’s maritime assets will be fully integrated into your master trust. Vince Rossi’s legal standing in the state of Illinois will be completely erased."
Roman paused, the tip of his pen hovering over the signature line.
He looked up at Julian. "You've been remarkably quiet about all of this, Julian. When I told you about Dr. Voss and Isabella six months ago, you didn't seem surprised."
Julian offered a soft, polished smile. "In my profession, Roman, one learns that human greed is the most predictable force in nature. Vince Rossi was an ambitious old dog. It was only a matter of time before he tried to bite the hand that fed him."
"And you?" Roman asked casually, setting the pen down onto the glass table. "What is your predictable force, Julian?"
Julian paused, his porcelain cup halfway to his lips. "I don't follow, Roman."
Roman leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms over his chest. "Three days ago, while I was in New York, I had my private Swiss auditors run a deep trace on the offshore shell company that paid Dr. Voss—Aegis Advisory."
Julian’s posture remained relaxed, but the spark in his eyes went cold.
"Vince Rossi’s money funded Aegis, yes," Roman continued smoothly. "But the legal registration of Aegis Advisory in Delaware was executed by a law firm in Boston fifteen years ago. A firm where you were a senior managing partner before I hired you."
Silence descended upon the eighty-story boardroom like a falling guillotine.
Julian slowly set his espresso cup down on the saucer with a faint, sharp clink.
"You always were sharper than your father, Roman," Julian said, his smooth voice losing every trace of warmth, replaced by a flat, calculating chill. "Your father was a brute who ruled with fists and guns. You built a legitimate empire. But you made one fatal mistake."
"Which was?" Roman asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
"You trusted your wife to manage the books," Julian said calmly. He reached into his leather briefcase sitting on the floor beside his chair. When his hand emerged, it was holding a sleek, suppressed 9mm pistol pointed directly at Roman’s chest.
"Lucia was a brilliant woman," Julian murmured, keeping the gun perfectly steady. "Four years ago, she noticed that forty million dollars had been diverted from the port construction accounts into my private accounts in the Cayman Islands. She came to me first, thinking it was an accounting error. She gave me twenty-four hours to explain."
Roman’s jaw flexed violently, his dark eyes burning with a lethal fire, but he remained motionless in his chair, knowing that a suppressed 9mm at three feet distance was faster than any human reaction.
"So I called Vince Rossi," Julian continued with a cold chuckle. "I told Vince that if Lucia exposed me, the entire Rossi-Valente merger would collapse. Vince provided the doctor, and I provided the access to the hospital’s internal pharmacy system. It was a seamless partnership."
"And Sophia?" Roman growled, the muscles in his neck bulging with rage.
"Sophia was a loose end," Julian admitted carelessly. "Vince got greedy six months ago. He wanted the entire trust immediately, so he used Isabella to push Voss into the cake plan. I told him it was sloppy, but the old fool wouldn't listen. Now Vince is in Sicily, Voss is dead, and you, Roman... are about to suffer a tragic, stress-induced cardiac event in your private office."

Julian reached into his pocket with his left hand, pulling out a small, pre-filled needle syringe. "An overdose of liquid digitalis. It leaves no trace in a routine toxicology screen. The press will report that the great Roman Valente died of a broken heart, just like his wife."
Before Julian could step around the table, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom were shattered inward with a deafening CRASH.
