Chapter 6 - The Whispering Ghost

Despite the peace that had settled over the estate, the past had a way of leaving thin, sharp glass shards buried in the carpet.

Two weeks after Roman’s proposal, an unexpected delivery arrived at the gates of the Valente estate. It was not a bomb, nor a threat, but a courier envelope stamped with the seal of a prestigious legal firm in downtown Chicago—Vance, Sterling & Howe.

The envelope was addressed specifically to: Ms. Mara Ellis, Personal and Confidential.

Mara sat in the private morning room, sipping her tea while Roman was in the conservatory holding a conference call with his European directors. She used a silver letter opener to slit the top of the heavy cream envelope.

Inside was a single, aged brass key attached to a leather tag with a hand-written address: Vault 412, Northside Safe Deposit Co., Chicago.

Accompanying the key was a formal letter from an attorney named Arthur Vance:

Dear Ms. Ellis,

Pursuant to the legal instructions left by your late mother, Clara Ellis, four years prior to her passing, this vault key was to be released to you only upon the public confirmation of Vince Rossi’s permanent departure from the United States and the full legal clearance of the Lucia Valente estate.

The contents of Vault 412 belong entirely to you.

Mara’s hands trembled slightly as she held the cold brass key. Her mother had known. Even four years ago, before her house was burned down, Clara Ellis had set up a hidden fail-safe—a final voice from beyond the grave.

An hour later, armored by two of Roman’s most trusted security guards in an unmarked black SUV, Mara arrived at the stone-fronted building of the Northside Safe Deposit Company.

The vault manager, an elderly man in a formal suit, led her down two flights of stairs into a climate-controlled underground room lined with thousands of stainless steel boxes. He inserted his master key into Vault 412, turned it, and stepped back politely.

"Take all the time you need, Ms. Ellis," he said, closing the heavy privacy door behind him.

Mara pulled out the long metal deposit box and set it on the polished wooden table in the center of the room. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she lifted the hinged lid.

Inside the box were three items:

A thick, leather-bound journal belonging to her mother.

A small, sealed glass vial containing a clear liquid, labeled Sample B - Lucia Valente, Serum.

A heavy, antique silver pocket watch engraved with the initials: J.V.

Mara opened her mother’s journal to the final marked page. Clara’s elegant, neat handwriting filled the paper:

If Mara is reading this, it means I am gone, and the darkness has finally caught up with us.

Mara, my brave girl, if you have reached this point, you know that Dr. Voss was not working alone. Vince Rossi paid him, yes. But Voss was a coward who required a partner inside the hospital—someone with administrative access to the pharmacy vault who could clear the potassium shipments without raising red flags.

That partner was not Isabella Rossi.

It was Julian Vance—Roman’s trusted corporate attorney and chief financial officer.

Julian Vance embezzled millions from the Valente shipping firm during Lucia’s illness. He helped Vince Rossi organize the poisoning because Lucia had begun auditing the internal accounts two months before her death. If Roman ever finds out about Julian, he will destroy him. But be careful, my sweet girl. Julian is far more dangerous than Vince Rossi. He operates in the light, wearing a judge's smile.

Mara felt the air leave her lungs.

Julian Vance.

The silver-haired, impeccably dressed attorney who had managed Roman’s legal affairs for fifteen years. The man who sat at Roman’s dinner table every Thanksgiving. The man who had prepared the very prenuptial agreement for Isabella Rossi.

Julian Vance wasn't just a corrupt lawyer. He was the architect who had pulled the strings from behind the curtain while letting Vince Rossi take the fall.

Mara quickly closed the metal box, clutching her mother’s journal and the glass vial against her chest.

She pulled out her mobile phone and called Roman.

The call went straight to voicemail.

Mara’s blood ran cold. She dialed Luca Ferraro’s direct emergency line.

"Luca!" Mara said the moment the line connected, her voice tight with panic. "Where is Roman?"

"He’s at the downtown office on Michigan Avenue, Mara," Luca replied over the receiver. "He’s in a private closing meeting with Julian Vance to finalize the transfer of the Rossi shipping assets."

"Luca, listen to me very carefully," Mara said, sprinting toward the vault exit with her guards falling into formation behind her. "Get to that top-floor office right now. Julian Vance was the one who helped kill Lucia. He’s going to try to kill Roman before the contracts are signed!"
