Chapter 4 - The Secrets of Lily

We returned to the Greenwich estate just as the first light of dawn began to bleed through the heavy storm clouds.

The house was secure, but the atmosphere inside was charged with electric tension. Specialist Vance was sitting at the kitchen island, drinking coffee with Mrs. Harris, while Lily sat at the big wooden table, carefully coloring a picture book Mrs. Harris had brought down from the attic.

In the small bassinet beside her, the baby was sleeping peacefully, wrapped in a fresh white blanket.

The moment I walked through the door, wet, bruised, and covered in soot, Lily leaped out of her chair and ran toward me.

“Mr. Nathan!” she cried, wrapping her arms around my waist. “You came back! Did you find the bad men?”

I dropped to one knee, ignoring the pain in my body, and looked at her. Up close, I noticed something I had been too distracted to see the previous night—a small, silver heart-shaped locket hanging around her neck, tucked beneath her oversized sweatshirt.

“Lily,” I said gently, touching the locket. “Where did you get this?”

Lily looked down at the locket, her small fingers tracing the faded silver surface. “My grandmother gave it to me before the ambulance took her away. She said if I ever got scared, I should look at the picture inside.”

With trembling fingers, I reached out and popped the small latch on the locket.

Inside was a tiny, faded photograph of a young woman with warm brown eyes and a gentle smile, holding a newborn baby girl.

It was Clara.

I gasped, the air rushing out of my lungs as if I had been struck in the chest with an iron bar.

“Clara...” I whispered.

Specialist Vance stood up from the counter, her eyes wide with shock as she walked over to us. “Mr. Carter... what are you saying?”

“Lily isn't a random child who found a baby in a box,” I said, turning to look at Marcus, tears pouring down my face. “Lily is Clara’s daughter. She’s my daughter.”

Lily stared at me, her big dark eyes filling with confusion and hope. “You... you know my mommy?”

“I loved your mommy, Lily,” I sobbed, pulling her tightly into my arms, holding her as if she were the most precious thing in the entire universe. “I loved her with all my heart. And she brought you to me.”

Mrs. Harris covered her mouth, bursting into tears, while Marcus turned his head away, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand.

The pieces of the horrific puzzle were finally complete. Seven years ago, while held captive in Julian Thorne’s secret facility, Clara had given birth to our first child—Lily. Realizing the danger her daughter was in, Clara had somehow managed to smuggle Lily out with her trusted grandmother, hiding her in plain sight in the city.

And when Clara was forced to carry our second child—the newborn boy—she knew that Lily was the only one who could bridge the gap, the only one whose instincts would lead her to find her baby brother and bring him to my gates.

My phone rang again. It was Marcus’s team leader stationed at the perimeter gate.

“Sir! We have multiple unauthorized vehicles approaching the main gate! Black SUVs, heavy armor!”

I stood up, holding Lily’s hand tightly in mine. The time for running, for grieving, and for waiting was over.

“Marcus,” I said, my voice turning into absolute steel. “Call the State Police Task Force. Tell them we are executing an emergency raid on the Saint Jude Sanatorium in Westchester. And tell them Nathan Carter is coming to take his family back.”
