Chapter 6 - The Unbreakable Bond

I stepped up to the reinforced glass window, dropping the fire ax onto the concrete floor. I raised my hands, showing him I was unarmed.

“Julian,” I said, keeping my voice as steady, calm, and persuasive as humanly possible through the intercom. “Look around you. There are forty state troopers upstairs. The Attorney General has your ledgers. Your bank accounts are frozen. It’s over.”

“It’s not over!” Julian screamed, his hand shaking violently as he held the syringe inches from Clara’s neck. “I spent twelve years building this! I took your company! I took your family! You were supposed to die in that oncology ward ten years ago!”

Clara looked through the glass, her dark brown eyes meeting mine for the first time in eight years. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks, but she didn't look afraid. She looked at me with a profound, powerful love that twelve years of captivity had failed to extinguish.

“Nathan...” she whispered through the glass, her voice weak but clear. “He can’t hurt us anymore. The children... are they safe?”

“They’re safe, Clara,” I choked out, pressing my hand against the thick glass. “Lily brought the baby home. They are both at the estate, safe and warm. Our daughter saved our son.”

A beautiful, radiant smile broke across Clara’s pale face. “My sweet Lily...”

Julian looked between us, his madness turning into pure panic as he realized he had lost all leverage. “Shut up! Both of you, shut up!”

“Julian,” I said, leaning closer to the speaker. “If you press that plunger, you spend the rest of your life on death row. But if you drop that syringe right now, I will personally guarantee that you walk out of this room alive to face a judge. Give up, Julian. Let her go.”

Julian stared at the syringe, then at Clara, then at the heavy steel doors as the state police breaching team began setting up hydraulic jaws along the frame.

The frame groaned under thousands of pounds of pressure. Sparks flew into the air as the steel latch began to buckle.

Julian dropped his head, his shoulders collapsing as the illusion of his grand empire crumbled around him. The syringe slipped from his trembling fingers, shattering against the tile floor.

He stepped back, raising his hands into the air as the heavy blast doors burst open with a deafening crash.

Tactical officers swarmed the room, tackling Julian to the floor and slamming him into handcuffs, while I vaulted over the medical equipment and fell to my knees beside Clara’s chair.

I pulled her into my arms, holding her so tightly I could feel the faint, steady rhythm of her heart against my chest.

“I found you,” I sobbed, burying my face into her shoulder, smelling the faint, unmistakable scent of rain and lavender that had haunted my dreams for eight long years. “I found you, Clara.”

Clara wrapped her frail arms around my neck, kissing my cheek, my forehead, my tears. “You never gave up on me, Nathan. I knew you would come.”
