Chapter 5 - The Siege of Westchester

The rain had stopped, leaving behind a cold, thick fog that hung low over the dense forests of Westchester County.
A convoy of four state police vehicles, accompanied by two of my private armored SUVs, sped down the winding, secluded drive leading toward the Saint Jude Sanatorium. The old brick facility had been constructed in the 1920s, set far back from the main roads behind high concrete walls and wrought-iron gates.
Beside me in the back seat of the lead SUV sat Detective Sarah Lin, the lead investigator from the State Attorney General’s Special Crimes Division. She was reviewing the scorched ledger from St. Jude and the digital files Marcus had extracted from Julian’s proxy servers.
“This is unprecedented, Mr. Carter,” Detective Lin said, her voice heavy with grim determination. “If these medical records hold up in court, Julian Thorne isn't just facing kidnapping and extortion charges. He’s facing life in federal prison for illegal human experimentation and decade-long false imprisonment.”
“I don't care about his prison sentence, Detective,” I replied, staring out at the fog-shrouded trees. “I only care about getting Clara out of that building alive.”
We reached the main entrance of the sanatorium. The heavy iron gates were locked, but our lead armored vehicle didn't hesitate, slamming through the rusted iron with a deafening crash of twisted metal and shattering glass.
Police sirens shrieked into the morning air as tactical officers poured out of the vehicles, establishing a perimeter around the brick complex.
“Tactical Team One, move in!” Detective Lin ordered through her radio.
Marcus and I followed right behind the state police entry team, wearing heavy tactical vests. We burst through the heavy double doors of the main building. The interior was modern, built like a high-security medical facility disguised behind old brick walls—monitors, keycard scanners, and reinforced steel doors.
Julian’s private security guards, realizing they were surrounded by state troopers and federal agents, threw down their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.
“Lower level! Where is the containment wing?!” Marcus barked at the head of security, pinning him against the reception desk.
“Sub-level two!” the man stammered, terrified. “The medical suite at the end of the hall! But Thorne locked the blast doors from the inside ten minutes ago!”
I didn't wait for the SWAT team to set up breaching charges. I grabbed a heavy iron fire ax from the wall rack and sprinted down the concrete stairs toward sub-level two.
The air grew colder, smelling of ozone and antiseptics. At the end of the long corridor stood a heavy steel medical door, its digital lock flashing red.
Through the reinforced glass window set into the top of the door, I saw her.
She was sitting in a medical chair, hooked up to an IV line, looking frail, pale, and exhausted—but her eyes were open, filled with a fierce, unbreakable spirit.
Clara.

Standing beside her, holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid, was Julian Thorne. His face was bloody from our previous encounter in Manhattan, his eyes wild with the frantic madness of a trapped animal.
“Back away, Nathan!” Julian’s voice echoed through the intercom speaker outside the door. “One step closer and I inject her with a fatal dose of potassium chloride! I’ll burn this entire place to the ground before I let you take her!”
