Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

In the weeks that followed, the story of the Carter-Montgomery abduction and corporate conspiracy dominated news headlines across the globe.

The trial of Julian Thorne and his network of corrupt executives, private security personnel, and compromised medical professionals became the most publicized legal proceeding in modern American history.

I sat in the front row of the federal courtroom in Manhattan, holding Clara’s hand. She was dressed in a simple, elegant dark navy suit, her strength returning day by day under the care of the best medical specialists in the country.

Beside us sat Marcus, Mrs. Harris, and Specialist Vance—who had officially resigned from her state position to accept a role as the director of the newly established Montgomery Foundation for Missing Children.

At the prosecution table, Detective Lin and the U.S. Attorney presented a mountain of undeniable physical, digital, and financial evidence: the scorched ledger from St. Jude, the illegal cryo-transfer records, the satellite tracking data, and the testimony of three former guards who had turned state’s evidence in exchange for plea bargains.

When the verdict was read, Julian Thorne was found guilty on all thirty-four counts, including federal kidnapping, human experimentation, corporate fraud, extortion, and attempted murder.

The judge—a stern, silver-haired magistrate—sentenced Julian to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, ordering the complete seizure and liquidation of all assets associated with Vance-Thorne BioTech.

As the marshals led Julian away in heavy chains, he turned to look at me and Clara one last time. His face was hollow, defeated, and completely stripped of the arrogant vanity that had once driven him to commit unspeakable crimes.

Clara didn't flinch. She didn't look away. She simply held my hand tighter, watching the man who had imprisoned her vanish behind the heavy metal doors of federal justice forever.

Outside the courthouse, hundreds of reporters and television cameras swarmed the marble steps.

I stepped up to the podium, looking out at the sea of microphones.

“For twelve years,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the plaza, “a dark shadow tried to dismantle my family. But greed and malice will always crumble when confronted by the resilience of the human spirit. Today, justice was served. But more importantly... my family is finally whole.”
