Chapter 8 - The Table in the Sun

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Virginia, bringing warm sunshine, blooming cherry blossoms, and clear blue skies.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, the back patio of Damon’s craftsman house was filled with the delicious scent of grilled steak, roasted corn, and fresh herbs.

A long wooden dining table sat under the shade of a wide canvas umbrella.

Sitting at the head of the table was Erica, wearing a simple sundress, laughing as she poured fresh lemonade for Nia and her friend from school.

Sitting beside her was Damon, wearing a casual linen shirt, his hand resting comfortably on the back of Erica’s chair, his thumb gently caressing her shoulder.

Sitting across from them were Monica and her new partner, David—a soft-spoken high school teacher who had quickly become a wonderful friend to the family.

"So, Erica," Monica asked with a warm smile, cutting a piece of steak. "Nia tells me you two are taking her to Virginia Tech next weekend for the STEM campus tour?"

"We are," Erica beamed, looking at Nia with deep pride. "She wants to see the engineering labs. I promised her I'd show her where I used to study geometry."

"She hasn't stopped talking about it all week," Monica laughed softly, looking at Damon with genuine happiness. "Thank you, Erica. For everything you've done for our daughter."

"She’s an incredible girl, Monica," Erica said softly, reaching across the table to squeeze Nia’s small hand. "She makes it very easy."

After dinner, as the sun began to set behind the rolling green hills, casting a warm golden light over the porch, Nia and her friend ran into the house to watch a movie. Monica and David said their goodnights, heading down the driveway with warm hugs and promises for next weekend.

Damon and Erica sat alone on the wooden porch swing, swaying gently in the cool evening breeze.

Erica leaned her head against Damon’s strong shoulder, wrapping her arms around his arm, listening to the peaceful rustle of the oak leaves in the yard.

"What are you thinking about?" Damon asked softly, kissing the top of her head.

Erica looked down at her hands—hands that no longer clutched cold steering wheels in flooded rivers, but rested securely inside the large, warm grip of the man she loved.

"I was thinking about Riverbend Parkway," Erica confessed with a soft smile. "About the night my car died in the flood."

Damon wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. "Worst night of your life?"

Erica turned her face up to meet his dark, loving eyes, offering him a radiant, beautiful smile.

"Best night of my life," Erica corrected softly. "Because it brought me to you."

Damon smiled, leaning down to press his lips to hers in a long, tender, life-changing kiss as the golden sun dipped below the horizon, bathing their home in endless light and peace.
