Chapter 10 - The Master of the House

By midnight, the estate was quiet.

The guests had retired to their rooms, the fire in the living room had died down to a soft bed of glowing embers, and the snow outside fell in heavy, silent flakes against the dark windows.

Damiano walked slowly down the carpeted hallway of the second floor.

He wore a simple silk robe over his trousers, his feet bare against the soft runner rugs. He stopped outside the nursery door, pushing it open with a quiet, imperceptible nudge.

Inside, a small nightlight shaped like a glowing star cast soft yellow beams across the pale blue walls.

Lily lay tucked beneath a thick down comforter, fast asleep, clutching Daisy the cloth doll—which now featured two matching blue glass eyes, personally sourced and sewn on by Damiano himself.

Damiano stepped into the room on silent feet. He walked over to the side of the bed, gently pulling the blanket up over her small shoulders.

Lily stirred slightly, her small hand reaching out in her sleep to catch Damiano’s pinky finger, wrapping her tiny fingers around his broad knuckle with an instinctive, trusting grip.

"Goodnight, sleeping man," she murmured softly in her sleep.

Damiano knelt down beside the bed, leaning over to press a soft kiss against her forehead.

"Goodnight, little one," Damiano whispered back.

He didn't lock his bedroom door that night. He didn't check the perimeter cameras three times before closing his eyes. He didn't lie awake listening for footsteps in the dark.

For twenty years, Damiano Vitale had built a fortress to keep the world out, believing that survival meant living alone in the dark.

But as he walked back down the hallway toward the master suite where Emma was waiting for him in the warm, soft light, the ruthless mafia boss finally understood the truth.

The fortress hadn't saved him.

The child who had climbed onto his chest and laid her hand over his heart had given him something far more powerful than an empire.

She had given him a home.
