Chapter 6 - The Safe Room

The air inside the subterranean wine cellar was cool, quiet, and smelled of oak barrels and aging wine, completely isolated from the carnage taking place on the grounds above.

Damiano stepped up to the massive steel vault door of the panic room. He tapped his thumb against the biometric scanner.

The heavy hydraulic locks released with a loud, satisfying HISS.

The door swung open.

Inside, sitting on a leather sofa beneath soft yellow lamps, was Emma Bennett. She was holding Lily tightly against her shoulder, her arms wrapped so firmly around the child that her knuckles were white. Marco stood near the corner console, his laptop open, monitoring the estate’s diagnostic feeds.

When the door opened, Emma gasped, looking up with wide, terrified eyes.

Damiano stepped into the room. He had removed his tactical harness and wiped the blood from his hands, though his dark shirt was still damp with rain.

Lily peeked out from behind her mother’s arm. Her small face lit up the moment she recognized him.

"Sleeping man!" she cheered, squirming out of Emma’s tight embrace before her mother could stop her.

She ran across the concrete floor, her little barefoot toes tapping softly against the ground, and threw her arms around Damiano’s knees.

Damiano froze.

For the second time that day, the most feared man in the Hudson Valley found himself entirely powerless against a three-year-old child. Slowly, awkwardly, Damiano knelt down on one knee so he was at eye level with her.

"Are you okay, little one?" Damiano asked, his voice softer than Marco had ever heard it in ten years of service.

"The loud thunder scared Daisy," Lily said, holding up the one-eyed cloth doll. "But I told her you were outside fighting the monsters."

Damiano looked down at the doll, then up at Emma, who was slowly walking over, tears spilling freely down her face—not tears of terror, but of profound, overwhelming relief.

"The monsters are gone, Lily," Damiano said gently, reaching out to tuck a strand of dark hair behind the child's ear. "All of them."

Emma dropped to her knees beside Damiano, looking at him with an emotion so intense it made his heart hammer against his ribs.

"Is it over?" she whispered.

"Renato has been removed," Damiano said. "The Bellandis have been destroyed. This house is safe now, Emma. Truly safe."

Emma reached out, her small, warm hand covering Damiano’s calloused fingers where they rested on her daughter's shoulder. "Thank you, Damiano. Thank you for saving my baby."

Damiano looked into her hazel eyes, feeling a warmth spread through his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since his father was alive.

"You brought the truth into this house, Emma," Damiano said quietly. "You saved me first."
