Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Gate

The rain outside intensified, hammering against the library glass like a barrage of small stones.

Damiano sat perfectly motionless. The pieces of a twenty-year nightmare were falling into place with terrifying, mathematical precision.

Renato Salvi had not just been a loyal counselor. He was a parasite. He had poisoned Domenico Vitale to take control of the family's administrative network, used the ensuing war with the Bellandis to cover his tracks, and spent two decades bleeding the Vitale empire dry while standing beside Damiano at funerals and church services.

And he had brought Emma and her child into the mansion as a final, desperate pawn—a sacrificial lamb to be framed if the truth ever came to light.

"Boss," Marco’s voice came over the encrypted earpiece in Damiano’s ear. "We have a problem."

Damiano tapped his ear. "Speak."

"Perimeter thermal camera six just went down," Marco said, his voice urgent. "Three unidentified black SUVs just pulled off the secondary road near the south woods. They aren't using headlights. They just bypassed the outer biometric gate using a master override code."

"Renato’s code," Damiano said flatly.

"Yes," Marco confirmed. "And Boss... Renato just left his quarters. He's walking down to the basement armory right now with four of his senior estate guards."

Damiano didn't panic. He stood up smoothly, reaching into the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk. He pulled out a heavy black tactical harness, slipping it over his shoulders, followed by a silenced submachine gun.

He turned to Emma, who was staring at the weapons with wide, horrified eyes.

"Marco," Damiano commanded. "Take Emma down to the wine cellar panic room through the internal chute. Secure her with her daughter. If anyone attempts to breach that door who isn't me or Enzo... vent the tear gas into the hallway."

"Understood, Boss," Marco said.

Emma stood up, her knees trembling so badly she could barely stand. "Mr. Vitale... please. What about the men coming?"

Damiano walked over to her. For the first time in twenty years, he reached out and touched someone without the intent to harm. He gently placed his hand on her shoulder, his dark eyes burning with an intense, protective flame.

"No one touches you or your child in this house again, Emma," Damiano said softly. "I give you my word as a Vitale."

He turned to the wall panel, hitting the release switch for the hidden service passage. Marco stepped out, taking Emma by the arm and leading her down into the darkness.

Once the panel slid shut, Damiano turned toward the library’s main doors.

He drew his sidearm, racked the slide with a crisp clack, and stepped out into the dark, silent corridor of his estate.
