Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Nightmare

The rain poured heavily against the glass windows of the Vance townhouse. It was midnight, and the house was quiet. Evelyn was sitting in Lily’s bedroom, watching her daughter sleep peacefully under the soft glow of a nightlight.

Despite their legal victories, Evelyn felt an overwhelming sense of dread. She couldn't shake the feeling that a storm was brewing, one that legal documents and restraining orders couldn't protect them from.

Suddenly, the power went out.

The entire townhouse plunged into pitch-black darkness. The steady hum of the air conditioning died, replaced by the heavy sound of the pouring rain.

Evelyn’s heart leaped into her throat. "Marcus?" she called out, referencing the head of security. She reached for her phone, but there was no signal—a cell jammer was operating nearby.

Before she could stand up, the bedroom door burst open. A figure in a dark raincoat and a ski mask stepped in. Evelyn reacted on pure instinct, throwing herself over Lily’s sleeping body.

"Get away from her!" Evelyn screamed, fighting blindly in the dark. She swung her fists, striking the intruder’s shoulder, but the man was stronger. He grabbed her arms, pinning her down to the floor.

"Shut up, Evelyn!" a familiar voice hissed.

It was Julian.

Even through the mask, she recognized his scent, his voice, his toxic presence. "Julian? Are you insane? The police will kill you!"

"The police aren't here," Julian laughed maniacally. He held her down while a second intruder—a hired thug—grabbed Lily from the bed. The little girl woke up, screaming in terror.

"Mommy! Mommy, help me!" Lily cried, her small hands reaching out in the darkness.

"Lily!" Evelyn screamed, fighting with a ferocity she didn't know she possessed. She bit Julian’s hand, drawing blood. He swore loudly, striking her across the face. The force of the blow sent Evelyn crashing against the nightstand, her vision spinning as blood trickled from her lip.

"Take the kid to the van!" Julian ordered the thug. He looked down at Evelyn, who was struggling to get up from the floor. "You thought you won, Evelyn? You thought you could throw me out like trash? I’m taking what’s mine. Your father’s empire is going to pay for my new life."

By the time Evelyn managed to stumble out into the hallway, the house was silent. She found Marcus and two other guards unconscious on the floor, knocked out by a powerful sleeping gas introduced through the ventilation system.

Panic, raw and paralyzing, threatened to consume her. But she forced it down. She was a Vance, and more importantly, she was Lily’s mother.

She ran downstairs to her father’s study, where the emergency backup power system was located. She punched in a secret code, restoring power to the house’s internal communications. Arthur Vance rushed into the room moments later, his face pale with worry.

"Evelyn! What happened? I heard noises—"

"Julian took Lily," Evelyn said, her voice shaking but her eyes burning with an icy, terrifying rage. "He used a cell jammer and sleeping gas. He thinks he’s escaping."

Arthur’s hand gripped his cane so tightly his knuckles turned blue. "I’ll call the federal authorities. We’ll close the borders."

"No, there’s no time," Evelyn said, pulling up a tracking application on her laptop. She pointed to a glowing red dot moving rapidly through the city map. "When I bought Lily that custom stuffed bear last month, I sewed a military-grade GPS tracker inside its lining. He took the bear with her. They are heading toward the old industrial district."

Arthur looked at his daughter, seeing the absolute determination in her face. "Then we don't wait for the police. We go ourselves."
