Chapter 8 - The Price of Greed

"Julian, put the gun down," Evelyn pleaded, her voice dropping to a gentle, maternal whisper. "Look at Lily. She’s terrified. Whatever happens between us, she is innocent. Let her walk to me, and you can try to escape with Victoria. I won't stop you."
Julian looked down at his daughter. For a single, fleeting second, a spark of the man he used to be—the man who had held Lily in the delivery room five years ago—reappeared in his eyes. He saw the pure terror in his child's eyes, a terror caused entirely by him.
His hand began to shake. "Evelyn... I..."
"Don't be a coward, Julian!" Victoria screamed, her finger tightening on her trigger. "Shoot them! Or I’ll shoot you!"
In that split second of hesitation, Victoria fired her gun.
But she didn't aim for Julian. She aimed for Evelyn, intending to kill the true mastermind behind her downfall.
"No!" Julian roared.
In a final, instinctive act of redemption, Julian threw his body in front of Evelyn, pushing Lily to the floor. The bullet tore into Julian’s shoulder, sending him crashing to the ground.
Before Victoria could fire a second shot, Marcus and the security team unleashed a hail of non-lethal flashbangs and rubber tactical rounds. The warehouse exploded in blinding light and sound. Victoria was slammed against the server rack, her gun flying from her hand as she was violently tackled to the floor by four security guards, her face pressed hard into the cold concrete.
Evelyn didn't care about the gunfire or the chaos. She sprinted forward, throwing herself onto the floor and pulling Lily into her arms.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Lily sobbed, burying her face into Evelyn’s neck.
"I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you," Evelyn wept, holding her daughter so tightly she felt their hearts beating in unison. The nightmare was finally over.
Arthur Vance walked over, looking down at Julian, who was clutching his bleeding shoulder, groaning in pain on the floor. The arrogance was completely gone from Julian’s face, replaced by a hollow, broken emptiness.

"You saved my daughter and granddaughter tonight, Julian," Arthur said coldly. "For that alone, I will instruct my lawyers not to seek the maximum penalty. But you are going to prison for a very long time."
Julian looked up at Evelyn, who was walking away with Lily in her arms, protected by her father. He realized that his greed hadn't just cost him his company, his wealth, and his freedom. It had cost him the only two people who had ever truly loved him. He let out a broken sob as the police officers slammed handcuffs onto his wrists, dragging him away into the dark, rainy night.
