Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Vault

The old industrial district was a maze of abandoned factories and rusted warehouses. At its center sat the Vance Legacy Server Facility, a reinforced concrete bunker built during the Cold War to protect the company's early technological infrastructure.
Julian’s van screeched to a halt outside the heavy steel doors. He jumped out, dragging a crying Lily by the hand, while Victoria followed closely behind, carrying a portable hacking terminal.
"Let me go! I want my mommy!" Lily sobbed, clutching her teddy bear tightly.
"Shut up, you brat!" Julian snapped, pulling her toward the biometric scanner next to the steel door. He grabbed her small thumb, forcing it onto the glass scanner, and then forced her head forward so the infrared light could scan her retina.
A soft chime echoed through the dark alleyway. Access Granted. Welcome, Lily Vance.
The heavy steel doors slid open with a loud groan. Julian laughed triumphantly, pushing Lily inside. "We’re in! Victoria, set up the terminal. Let’s download everything and get out of here."
Victoria quickly connected her device to the main legacy server rack. Digital progress bars began to fill up as decades of invaluable logistics data, routing algorithms, and secret global trade agreements were copied onto her encrypted drive.
"Five minutes, Julian," Victoria said, her eyes reflecting the green light of the screen. "Five minutes and we are multi-millionaires."
"Julian."
A voice echoed from the darkness of the facility entrance.
Julian and Victoria spun around. Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain, was Evelyn. Behind her stood Arthur Vance, flanked by twenty heavily armed private security operatives.
Julian immediately pulled Lily in front of him, drawing a small handgun from his jacket and pressing it against his own daughter’s shoulder. "Stay back! I swear to God, Evelyn, I will pull this trigger! Don't step any closer!"
Evelyn stopped. Her heart broke seeing her daughter’s terrified face, but she forced her voice to remain completely steady. "Julian, look at yourself. You’re holding a gun to your own daughter. Is this what your 'genius' built? A hostage situation in a dirty warehouse?"
"You drove me to this!" Julian screamed, his eyes rolling wildly. "You and your bastard father! You ruined my life!"
"You ruined your own life the moment you forgot who built the floor you were standing on," Arthur Vance said, stepping forward, his cane clicking loudly against the concrete floor. "Julian, look at the woman beside you. Do you really think she’s going to share that money with you?"
Julian frowned, his eyes darting toward Victoria. "What are you talking about?"
Evelyn pulled out her phone, pressing a button. A recorded audio file began to play through the facility’s overhead speakers. It was Victoria’s voice from earlier that night: “Julian is taking the bait... I will secure the blueprints and eliminate Julian from the equation... leave him to rot in prison...”
Julian’s blood ran cold. He turned his head slowly toward Victoria. "You... you betrayed me?"
May you like
Victoria didn't deny it. Seeing that the game was up, she grabbed her encrypted drive, pulled out her own compact pistol, and aimed it directly at Julian’s chest. "You were always an idiot, Julian. A weak, arrogant boy who thought he was a king. Did you really think I loved you? You were just a key to unlock this door."
The standoff was absolute. Julian aimed his gun at Evelyn, Victoria aimed hers at Julian, and the security team aimed theirs at both of them. At the center of it all was a terrified four-year-old girl.
