Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 6:00 AM the following morning, the sun had barely begun to streak the sky over North Oak, but the study inside Whitaker Manor was ablaze with light.
Four senior partners from Sterling, Vance & Associates—the top family law and corporate litigation firm in the state—sat around Richard’s polished mahogany desk. Beside them sat Marcus Vance, Richard’s personal legal counsel for thirty years.
"The emergency custody petition is ready, Richard," Marcus said, sliding a thick stack of papers across the desk. "Based on Dr. Keller’s medical report, the police report filed last night, and the deed records, Judge Harrison will sign the temporary ex parte custody order by nine o'clock. Mark and Claudia will have zero legal right to approach Ethan."
"Good," Richard said, taking a sip of black coffee. "What about the eviction?"
"Claudia’s lawyers called my office twenty minutes ago," another attorney spoke up. "She’s trying to claim marital residence rights. She’s threatening to go to the media with allegations that you assaulted her in her own home."
Richard chuckled—a dry, humorless sound. "Let her try. Arthur, bring up the hallway footage from the North Oak house."
Arthur pressed a key on the wall panel, dropping a projection screen over the bookshelf. The video played silently: Claudia standing with her wineglass, gesturing dismissively at the shivering child; Mark sitting on the sofa, casually checking his phone; Richard entering, taking the child, and Claudia lunging forward to grab Richard’s jacket before he struck her back in self-defense and child protection.
"The audio feed picked up her stating, 'He follows my rules,' after leaving a toddler outside in twenty-degree weather," Marcus noted with a sharp smile. "If she goes to the press, we leak this unedited footage. She won't just lose in court; she’ll be ruined publicly."
"I don't just want her evicted, Marcus," Richard said, standing up and walking to the glass doors overlooking the courtyard. "I want her stripped of every asset she manipulated Mark into giving her. The luxury cars, the offshore accounts, the jewelry purchased with Whitaker funds. And as for Mark..."

Richard paused, a heavy, painful weight settling in his chest. Mark was his only son, the boy he had raised after his wife passed away twenty years ago. He had given Mark every advantage, every luxury, every opportunity. And Mark had turned into a weak, cowardly man who allowed a cruel woman to torture his own flesh and blood.
"Remove Mark from the executive board of Whitaker Logistics," Richard commanded quietly. "Freeze his trust distributions. Revoke his corporate credit lines. If he wants to live like an unemployed coward, he can experience what it feels like to earn his own bread."
