Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason
Six months later, the trial of Claudia Vance-Whitaker concluded in the state circuit court.
The courtroom was packed with reporters, local citizens, and legal experts who had followed the high-profile fall of the former socialite.
Claudia sat at the defense table wearing a plain gray jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her face pale and drawn. The arrogance that had once defined her was completely gone, replaced by a sullen, desperate bitterness.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
"On count one, aggravated child abuse, we find the defendant, Claudia Vance-Whitaker, guilty," the jury foreman announced. "On count two, corporate embezzlement, guilty. On count three, grand larceny, guilty."
The judge, a stern woman in her sixties who had reviewed the full medical reports and video footage of Ethan, looked down from the bench with absolute coldness.
"Claudia Vance-Whitaker," the judge spoke, her voice ringing clearly across the silent courtroom. "Your actions against a helpless three-year-old child were not merely illegal; they were utterly devoid of basic human decency. You exploited a family's trust, stole millions of dollars, and subjected a toddler to life-threatening exposure out of pure malice."
The judge paused, adjusting her glasses.
"I sentence you to twelve years at the state correctional facility, without the possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, full restitution in the amount of $2.4 million is ordered to be paid to the Whitaker Charitable Foundation."

Claudia collapsed onto the table, sobbing hysterically as the bailiffs placed her in handcuffs and led her away through the side doors.
Standing in the back of the gallery, Mark watched his former wife being led away. He wore a simple, clean suit he had purchased with his own earned wages. He didn't celebrate, nor did he cry. He simply took a deep breath, turned around, and walked out of the courthouse to catch the bus back to his shift at the warehouse.
