Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Gates

At 10:00 AM, a loud commotion at the iron security gates of Whitaker Manor alerted the security team.
Richard walked down the long gravel driveway, flanked by Marcus Vance and two imposing security guards. Standing on the other side of the wrought-iron gate was Mark, looking disheveled in a wrinkled suit, his face red with frustration. Beside him stood Claudia, wearing dark oversized sunglasses to cover the swelling on her left cheek, flanked by a high-priced local defense attorney named Arthur Pendelton.
"Dad!" Mark yelled through the bars. "Let us in! You took my son! You can't just kidnap my child!"
Richard stopped ten feet from the gate, his hands resting comfortably in his coat pockets.
"You lost the right to call him your son the moment you left him outside to freeze while you drank wine inside, Mark," Richard said calmly.
Pendelton, Claudia’s lawyer, stepped forward, holding a briefcase. "Mr. Whitaker, I am representing Claudia and Mark. What you did last night constitutes illegal entry, physical battery, and custodial interference. We are here to demand the immediate return of Ethan Whitaker, or we will file criminal charges immediately."
Marcus Vance stepped alongside Richard, holding up a certified document bearing a bright blue state court seal.
"Save your breath, Pendelton," Vance announced smoothly. "Judge Harrison signed the emergency protection order two hours ago. Sole legal and physical custody of Ethan Whitaker has been granted to Richard Whitaker. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order has been issued against both Mark Whitaker and Claudia Vance-Whitaker. You are currently within five hundred feet of the child’s legal guardian. Step off this property line, or my security detail will have the state troopers arrest you for contempt."
Claudia ripped off her sunglasses, her cheek dark purple, her eyes wild with rage. "You old bastard! You think you own everything? Mark is his father! You can't separate a child from his father!"
"I am saving my grandson from a monster and a spineless accomplice," Richard replied, staring directly at Claudia. "And speaking of ownership, Claudia..."
Richard nodded to Marcus, who pulled out a second document.
"This is an emergency seizure order for the Mercedes SUV you drove here today," Vance said. "The vehicle was leased under Whitaker Enterprise accounts, which have been frozen due to suspected financial fraud. Sheriff deputies are en route to impound it."
Right on cue, two state police cruisers pulled up behind Claudia’s luxury SUV, their lights flashing silently against the trees.
Claudia looked at the police, then at Mark, her voice turning into a high-pitched shriek. "Mark! Do something! Tell him! Tell him to give us the kid and the money!"
Mark looked at his wife, then looked through the iron bars at his father. For the first time in years, the haze of manipulation seemed to fracture, exposing the terrified, bankrupt man beneath.
"Dad..." Mark begged, his voice breaking. "Please. I made a mistake."

"A mistake is forgetting to buy milk, Mark," Richard said softly, his voice full of a sorrow that cut deeper than anger. "Leaving your barefoot child in the freeze is a crime against humanity. You are no son of mine until you prove you are a man."
Richard turned his back and walked away as the state troopers stepped out of their cruisers to begin towing Claudia’s vehicle.
