Chapter 1 - The Weight of Steel and Blood

The silence following the crash of the heavy ceramic bowl was deafening. Mashed potatoes dripped from Evelyn Vance’s pristine silk dress, clinging to her meticulously styled grey hair as she sprawled across the soaked hardwood floor. She coughed, choking on the buttery mash, her hand clawing wildly at the air before coming down hard into the pool of filthy mop water she had poured over Brenley just moments prior.
Beside her, Carter stood paralyzed. Brenley’s husband—the man who had sworn before two hundred guests in a gilded cathedral to love, honor, and protect her—looked between his mother weeping on the floor and the towering figure of Rourke Thorne.
Rourke did not look like a man who spent his days in executive boardrooms. Standing six-foot-three, with broad shoulders forged from decades of building a logistics and steel empire from the ground up, he looked like a storm given human form. His tailored jacket was unbuttoned, his dark eyes burning with an ancient, murderous fury as his left arm held Brenley firmly against his side. Brenley was trembling, her wet maternity dress clinging cold against her skin, her hands still reflexively cradling her seven-month belly.
"Dad..." Brenley choked out, a sob finally breaking through her throat. The dirty dishwater dripped from her soaked dark hair down onto Rourke’s crisp white shirt, but he didn't care. He tightened his grip on her, shielding her with his body.
"Shh," Rourke whispered, his voice dangerously soft as he smoothed a wet lock of hair away from her pale, shivering forehead. "I’m here, baby. Nobody touches you again. Nobody."
"What... what did you just do?!" Carter finally found his voice, stepping forward, his face flushed red with sudden outrage. He pointed a trembling finger at Rourke. "You attacked my mother in her own home! You crazy old bastard—"
Rourke turned his head slowly. The sheer weight of his glare cut Carter’s sentence in half.
"Her home?" Rourke’s voice was a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "You think this penthouse belongs to your mother, Carter?"
Carter swallowed hard, glancing down at Evelyn, who was currently scrambling onto her hands and knees, sputtering in outrage as she tried to wipe yellow butter and starch from her eyelids. "My family... my family paid for—"
"Your family paid for nothing," Rourke interrupted calmly. "Your father went bankrupt six years ago. I bought the mortgage on this entire building through a shell corporation to give my daughter a comfortable place to live when she married you. Every brick, every piece of marble, every drop of water you just threw at my pregnant child belongs to me."
Evelyn gasped, wiping her mouth with the back of her sleeve, her vanity completely shattered. "You're lying! Carter, call security! Call the police! He assaulted me!"
"Call them," Rourke said, pulling his phone from his pocket with one hand while keeping his other arm anchored around Brenley. He tossed the phone onto the dining table, where it bounced among the silver cutlery. "Call the chief of police. Ask for Thomas Vance. Oh, wait—you share a last name, don't you? Tell Thomas that Rourke Thorne is standing in the middle of his cousin's dining room, waiting to discuss how his family treats my heir."
Evelyn’s face turned from red to a sickly, pale grey. She knew the name. Everyone in the state knew Rourke Thorne. He was not just rich; he was foundational. His companies built the roads, the bridges, and the skyscrapers. His influence reached deep into the judiciary, the governor's mansion, and every major financial institution in the region.
"Brenley," Carter tried again, taking a step toward his wife, shifting his tone into a sickeningly sweet tone of manipulative concern. "Sweetheart, look at me. Your dad is confusing you. You're emotional right now because of the baby. Mom was just trying to teach you about domestic responsibilities before the child arrives. We discussed this—"
"You discussed taking my child," Brenley said, her voice shaking violently as she looked at Carter. The timid, quiet girl who had spent the last two years trying to earn her mother-in-law's approval suddenly seemed to harden under her father's arm. "You stood there... right there... while she threw a bucket of filthy water over me. And you told me your mistress was taking my baby."
"It's practical, Brenley!" Carter snapped, his composure slipping again as arrogance took over. "Veronica has a background in early childhood development! You're unstable, you have no career, and frankly, my mother and I decided long ago that you aren't fit to raise a Vance heir!"
"A Vance heir?" Rourke let out a cold, dark laugh that chilled the room. "You pathetic little leech. You think that child is a Vance?"
Rourke took a step forward, pulling Brenley with him. Carter instinctively took two steps back, hitting the edge of the mahogany table.
"As of five minutes ago, your marriage is over," Rourke declared. "You, your mistress, and this miserable excuse for a mother will be out of this building by midnight."
"You can't do that!" Evelyn shrieked, finally managing to pull herself up by clutching a dining chair, her gown ruined, her mascara running down her tear-stained, potato-covered face. "We have a lease! Carter is her husband! The law protects us!"
"The law," Rourke said, taking out his own silk handkerchief to gently dab the dirty water from Brenley’s eyes, "is something I buy and sell daily. Gerald!"
The double doors of the penthouse burst open. Two men in dark, tailored suits stepped into the room, followed by Gerald Vance—Rourke’s chief legal counsel and personal fixer, a man whose quiet demeanor hid a ruthless legal mind.
"Mr. Thorne," Gerald said, taking in the scene without a single flicker of surprise. He motioned to the two security guards behind him. "The eviction notices are drafted. The temporary restraining order regarding Mrs. Thorne-Vance's medical records and physical person is being signed by Judge Miller as we speak."
"Good," Rourke said. "Have the guards stand outside this door. If either of these creatures comes within fifty feet of my daughter, have them arrested for harassment and domestic endangerment."
"Dad..." Brenley whispered, her body shivering as the shock began to settle in. Her knees buckled slightly.
Rourke caught her instantly, lifting her effortlessly into his arms as if she were still eight years old. "I've got you, Bren. The car is downstairs. Warm clothes, a hot bath, and your old room are waiting."
As Rourke turned toward the door, carrying his wet, pregnant daughter, Carter made the mistake of reaching out to grab Rourke’s arm. "You can't just take my wife, Thorne! That baby is half mine!"
May you like
Rourke stopped. He didn't turn around completely, but he looked over his shoulder with eyes so dark they looked like endless abysses.
"If you ever touch her again, Carter," Rourke said, his voice dropping to a whisper that made the security guards stiffen, "I won't use a bowl of potatoes. I'll use everything I own to crush you into dust. Try me."
