Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

Six weeks had passed since the demolition of the Vance estate.

The winter snow had dusted the valley in a pristine coat of white, turning the former site of the Vance mansion into a serene landscape. Dozens of construction vehicles and teams were already at work, laying the deep concrete foundations for the Eleanor Thorne Pediatric Care & Maternal Sanctuary—named in honor of Brenley's late mother.

Brenley, now eight and a half months pregnant, stood inside the warm glass observation trailer overlooking the site, pointing out architectural blueprints to the lead contractor.

"We need the southern wing to have floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum natural light," Brenley directed, her thumb tracing the blue lines on the layout. "The recovery rooms for new mothers should feel like a home, not a medical facility."

"Understood, Mrs. Thorne," the architect smiled warmly. "We're on track to complete the structural frame by early spring."

Outside the trailer, a sleek black SUV pulled up, and Rourke stepped out, carrying a large thermos of hot chocolate and a soft wool blanket. He stepped into the warm trailer, shaking the snow from his heavy coat.

"You're supposed to be resting at home, young lady," Rourke scolded gently, wrapping the warm blanket around her shoulders and handing her a cup of cocoa. "Dr. Aris said you could go into labor any day now."

"I feel great, Dad," Brenley smiled, taking a sip of the sweet drink. "Working on this project gives me energy. It feels like I'm finally building something that matters."

"You've already built something that matters," Rourke said softly, touching her round stomach gently. "How's my grandchild doing today?"

"Active as usual," Brenley laughed as a noticeable bump pressed against her dress under Rourke's hand. "I think he's practicing kickboxing in there."

"Good. A strong Thorne," Rourke grinned.

Just then, Gerald stepped into the trailer, holding a secure electronic tablet. His expression was serious.

"Update on the court proceedings, Mr. Thorne, Brenley," Gerald reported.

Brenley turned around. "What happened?"

"Carter Vance’s trial concluded an hour ago," Gerald said. "Due to the overwhelming evidence, including the surveillance tapes and his mother's testimony incriminating him in an attempt to manipulate company shares, Carter was sentenced to eight years in state prison without possibility of parole for the first four years."

Brenley breathed out a quiet sigh. "And Evelyn?"

"Evelyn pled guilty to felony assault and conspiracy to defraud," Gerald continued. "Considering her age and lack of prior criminal record, the judge sentenced her to five years of probation, fifteen hundred hours of mandatory community service, and complete restitution of all seized assets to the Thorne Charitable Trust. She is currently living in a state-subsidized senior housing unit and working six days a week cleaning public parks."

"Cleaning parks," Rourke chuckled coldly. "Poetic justice for a woman who loved throwing dirty water."

Brenley looked out at the snowy construction site. The anger that had once consumed her when thinking about Carter and Evelyn had completely dissolved. They were no longer ghosts haunting her life; they were merely distant shadows that had been swept away by justice.

"And Veronica Miller?" Brenley asked.

"Veronica tried to flee to the Bahamas last week using a fraudulent passport," Gerald smirked. "She was apprehended at the airport and is currently facing federal fraud charges related to an offshore scheme she ran before meeting Carter. She won't be bothering anyone for a very long time."

Brenley closed her eyes for a moment, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle over her heart. The storm had finally passed. The debts were paid, the evil was answered, and the path ahead was completely clear.

Suddenly, a sharp, tight pain bloomed across lower abdomen. Brenley gasped, her hands dropping her cocoa cup as it spilled onto the floor.

May you like

"Brenley?!" Rourke caught her instantly, his face turning pale with sudden panic.

"Dad..." Brenley breathed out, her hands gripping Rourke's coat tightly as another contraction rippled through her body. "I think... I think it's time."
