Chapter 8 - The Birth of an Heir

The private maternity wing of Thorne General Hospital was locked down under maximum security.
Rourke Thorne paced the private waiting lounge like a caged lion. For three hours, the powerful industrialist had been wringing his hands, turning every few seconds to look at the double oak doors leading into the delivery suite. Beside him sat Gerald, trying calmly to review corporate documents, though even he looked anxious.
"Why is it taking so long?" Rourke demanded, looking at his watch for the hundredth time. "It's been three hours! Go ask Dr. Aris if she needs more specialists! I can fly in the top chief of obstetrics from Johns Hopkins in twenty minutes!"
"Mr. Thorne, calm down," Gerald smiled patiently. "First labors take time. Dr. Aris is the finest physician in the state. Brenley is in good hands."
Before Rourke could reply, the heavy doors slid open.
Dr. Aris stepped out into the hallway, pulling off her surgical mask. A wide, exhausted smile lit up her face.
"She did it, Rourke," Dr. Aris announced.
Rourke froze, his breathing catching in his throat. "Is she... is the baby...?"
"A healthy, beautiful baby boy," Dr. Aris beamed. "Eight pounds, four ounces. Strong lungs, perfect vitals. Brenley is tired, but she's doing wonderfully. You can come in now."
Rourke didn't wait another second. He practically sprinted through the doors, rushing down the sterile corridor until he reached the private suite.
The room was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm glow of twilight streaming through the large windows. Brenley lay in the plush hospital bed, her damp hair styled loosely around her pale, radiant face.
Wrapped in a soft blue flannel blanket against her chest was a tiny, perfect bundle. The baby had a tuft of thick dark hair and tiny, delicate fingers that were currently holding onto Brenley's thumb.
Rourke stopped at the foot of the bed, his broad shoulders trembling as tears welled up in his dark eyes—tears that no businessman or competitor had ever seen him shed in his entire life.
"Bren..." Rourke whispered, his voice cracking.
"Come here, Dad," Brenley said softly, her eyes glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness.
Rourke walked over to the side of the bed and sat down gently on the edge. He reached out with a trembling hand, lightly touching the baby's impossibly soft cheek. The little boy opened his eyes—clear, bright grey eyes that matched Rourke's exactly.
"He has your eyes, Dad," Brenley whispered.
"He's beautiful," Rourke sobbed quietly, wiping a tear from his cheek with the back of his hand. "He's... he's absolute perfection."
"Do you want to hold him?"
Rourke looked terrified for a fraction of a second—the man who commanded thousands of employees and managed billions of dollars suddenly frightened of a tiny eight-pound child. "I... I don't want to break him."
"You won't," Brenley smiled, carefully lifting the bundle and placing him into her father's massive arms.
Rourke adjusted his grip, cradling the baby against his chest as if he were holding the most precious diamond in existence. The little boy let out a tiny, soft sigh and snuggled deeper into his grandfather's warm coat.
"What's his name, Brenley?" Rourke asked softly, looking down at the child.
Brenley reached out, taking her father's hand. "His name is Leo. Leo Thorne."
Rourke looked up, his eyes meeting his daughter's. "Leo... after my father."
"He's going to grow up knowing what a real man looks like, Dad," Brenley said, her voice filled with deep devotion. "He's going to grow up with a grandfather who protected his mother when the world turned cold."

Rourke leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against the baby's soft head, letting his tears fall onto the blanket.
"I swear to you, Leo," Rourke whispered fiercely, "as long as I have breath in my body, no harm will ever come to you or your mother. You are a Thorne. The world is yours."
