Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

The presence of the forged Navy document changed the nature of the afternoon completely. What had started as a dramatic family feud instantly escalated into a full-scale legal and intelligence inquiry.
Within an hour, two agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) arrived at the resort, summoned by Lord Sterling and verified by my own command. We moved to a larger conference room on the lower level, where Rachel was brought in by two royal security officers.
She no longer looked like a bride. Her veil was gone, her heavy silk dress was wrinkled, and her mascara was smeared down her cheeks. She looked small, angry, and cornered.
"Emily," she spat as she sat down across from me, her eyes burning with pure venom. "Are you happy now? You finally got what you wanted. You always had to be the hero, didn't you? The big, brave Navy commander! You couldn't just let me have my one day!"
"You forged official Department of Defense paperwork, Rachel," I said, my voice dangerously soft. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"
"I bought a template online for twenty dollars!" she shrieked, banging her manicured nails against the table. "It didn't mean anything! I just needed everyone to stop asking why you weren't there! If people knew I didn't invite my own sister, the media would have called me heartless! I had to give them an official reason!"
"You slandered a naval officer to a foreign head of state," NCIS Special Agent Vance stated, opening his laptop. "You forged federal documents. And according to the financial audits provided by the Valencian Crown, you used Prince Alexander's personal line of credit to wire two hundred thousand dollars to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands three days ago."
The room went completely still.
Prince Alexander, who was standing near the window, turned around slowly. His face was unreadable, his eyes cold as granite. "What shell company, Agent Vance?"
"A company named Aura Media Enterprises," Agent Vance read from his screen. "Registered under your name, Miss Carter. The funds were transferred without the knowledge of the royal treasurer."
Rachel’s confidence visibly evaporated. She shrank back into her chair, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "It... it was an investment. For my brand after the wedding..."
"You stole from the Crown before you even took the vows," Alexander said softly, walking over to stand behind my chair. He looked down at her with a mix of pity and profound disappointment. "You didn't want a marriage, Rachel. You wanted a takeover."
"Alexander, please!" she begged, reaching across the table to grab his hand, but he stepped back, out of her reach. "I love you! I did all of this for us! So we could be independent from your father's control!"
"My father's control protected my nation for forty years," Alexander replied coldly. "And his wisdom just saved me from making the greatest mistake of my life."
He looked at the NCIS agents, then at the royal guards standing by the door.
"Cancel the reception," Alexander ordered, his voice unwavering. "Announce to the press that the engagement is officially dissolved due to serious breach of trust and financial irregularities. Escort Miss Carter to her private residence under guard until the federal investigators complete their work."
"No! Alexander! Mom! Dad! Help me!" Rachel screamed as two female security officers hoisted her up by her arms and led her out of the room. Her cries echoed down the hallway until the heavy doors swung shut.
My mother collapsed into a chair, sobbing into her hands. My father stood beside her, his hand resting heavily on her shoulder, staring at the floor in utter shame.
I stood up, feeling a profound exhaustion settling into my bones.
"Commander Carter," King George said, walking over to me. "I deeply regret that your family has been subjected to this ordeal. But I am profoundly grateful that your presence brought the truth to light before my nation was bound to a woman of such deceit."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," I said, bowing my head slightly. "If I may be excused, I would like to take my parents home."
"Of course," the king said. Then he looked at his son. "Alexander, accompany the Commander to her transport."
