Chapter 8 - Waves of Change

The next six months were a whirlwind of international diplomacy, personal growth, and profound life transitions.

I returned to the United States to complete my tour of duty at Naval Station Norfolk. But the distance between Virginia and Valencia didn't pull Alexander and me apart; it drew us closer.

Every weekend that his royal duties allowed, Alexander flew across the Atlantic in a private jet, landing at a small airfield near my townhouse. We spent quiet evenings cooking dinner together, walking along the beach at Virginia Beach, and visiting my father in Ohio.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't just managing crises or protecting others; I was allowing myself to be loved and supported by someone who viewed me as his equal.

Meanwhile, my mother underwent intensive therapy in Ohio, slowly coming to terms with the destructive dynamic she had encouraged between Rachel and me for years. She wrote me a long, tearful letter apologizing for neglecting my achievements and favoring Rachel's superficial ambitions.

Rachel remained in federal prison. I visited her once.

It was a quiet, sobering meeting in a small visitation room. Rachel looked healthier, though her sharp edges had been smoothed down by the strict discipline of institutional life.

"I don't expect you to forgive me, Emily," Rachel said across the wooden table, her voice quiet and stripped of its former venom. "I was insane. I was so consumed by envy that I destroyed everything."

"I forgave you a long time ago, Rachel," I said softly. "I just hope you learn to like who you are without a title or a designer dress."

Rachel looked down at her hands, a single tear falling onto her blue prison uniform. "Thank you for coming, Emily. You didn't have to."

"You're still my sister," I replied gently. "When you get out, Dad and I will be here to help you start over. The right way."
