Chapter 9 - The Duty of Choice

In November of that year, I achieved a career goal I had worked toward for fifteen years: I was officially promoted to the rank of Captain in the United States Navy, making me one of the youngest women to hold that rank in naval aviation history.

At my promotion ceremony in Annapolis, Maryland, my father pinned the silver eagles onto my collar.

Standing right beside him, dressed in a formal charcoal suit, was Prince Alexander.

After the ceremony, we walked along the waterfront of the Naval Academy, watching the midshipmen march across the courtyard.

"Congratulations, Captain Carter," Alexander said, smiling brightly as he adjusted his coat against the chilly autumn wind.

"Thank you, Alexander," I said, looking at the silver eagle on my shoulder. "It's a heavy responsibility."

Alexander pulled a small, black velvet box from his coat pocket and held it in his palm. He didn't drop to one knee; he stood tall, looking into my eyes with absolute clarity and reverence.

"Emily," he said, opening the box to reveal a stunning sapphire ring surrounded by diamonds—a ring carved from the raw stone found in the mountains of Valencia. "My father and the Royal Council have officially approved a special constitutional amendment. Should you choose to marry me, you will not be required to surrender your military commission or your American citizenship. The Crown of Valencia recognizes you as an allied commander in your own right."

I stared at the sparkling blue gem, then looked up into the eyes of the prince who had fought his own establishment just to honor my identity.

"You changed royal protocol for me?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.

"You changed my life, Emily," Alexander answered. "I don't want a traditional princess who sits in a palace embroidery room. I want a partner who knows how to navigate storms, who stands for justice, and who walks beside me as my equal. Will you marry me?"

May you like

Tears gathered in my eyes, reflecting the grey autumn sky above the bay.

"Yes, Alexander," I whispered, stepping into his arms. "Yes. I will."
