Chapter 6 - A Royal Invitation

The verdict came down swiftly: Guilty on all counts of fraud, forgery, and grand larceny.
Due to her lack of prior criminal record, the judge sentenced Rachel to three years in a federal correctional facility, along with full restitution of the two hundred thousand dollars stolen from the Crown's accounts.
A week after the sentencing, I stood on the tarmac at Naval Station Norfolk, watching a sleek white and blue aircraft bearing the royal seal of Valencia taxi toward the private terminal.
King George and Prince Alexander stepped down the mobile staircase, accompanied by a small diplomatic security detail.
I stood at attention, saluting as the Sovereign approached.
"At ease, Commander," King George said with a warm smile, returning the salute. "You look much more comfortable in your home element."
"It's quieter here, Your Majesty," I replied.
"I doubt it will remain quiet for long," Prince Alexander said, stepping up beside his father. He was dressed in a tailored suit, looking relaxed and regal. "My father and I are here on official state business, Emily."
I raised an eyebrow. "State business?"
King George pulled an official parchment document from his coat pocket—stamped with the heavy gold wax seal of the Valencian Ministry of Defense.
"Commander Emily Carter," the king announced formally. "In light of your exceptional service to our royal family ten years ago, and your unwavering integrity during recent events, the Kingdom of Valencia hereby awards you the Order of the Grand Star of Valencia—our nation's highest civilian and military honor."
I stared at the document in shock. "Your Majesty... I cannot accept this. I was simply doing my duty as a naval officer."
"You did your duty to my nation, Commander," King George said firmly. "And you did your duty to truth. The ceremony will take place at the Royal Palace in Valencia next month. And this time..."
He handed me an embossed gold invitation card.
"...your invitation will not be lost in the mail."
I looked at the gold lettering on the card: Commander Emily Carter is cordially invited as the Guest of Honor to the Royal Palace of Valencia.
Alexander stepped closer, his voice dropping so only I could hear. "And I personally request that you stay at the palace for two weeks after the ceremony. I want to show you my home, Emily. The real Valencia. Without cameras, without lies, and without pretense."

I looked into Alexander's genuine, clear blue eyes, feeling a warmth rise in my chest that had nothing to do with naval duty or military discipline.
"I would be honored, Alexander," I said softly.
