Chapter 4 - The Beast Unleashed

Four massive black land cruisers smashed through the wooden security gates of Pier 42, their tires spraying gravel and saltwater as they slid into a perfect tactical semicircle around the guards' sedan.

The guards froze, shielding their eyes against the blinding halogen searchlights mounted on the roofs of the vehicles.

“What the hell—?!” the lead guard gasped, reaching frantically for his sidearm.

Before his hand could touch his holster, the side doors of the lead cruiser flew open. Four heavily armed men in full tactical armor poured out, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting bright red dots across the guards' chests.

“Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads! Move!” Viktor’s thunderous voice boomed over a loudspeaker.

The two HLM guards immediately threw their hands into the air, falling to their knees on the wet gravel, trembling in terror.

The rear passenger door of the center vehicle swung open slowly.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out into the rain. He wore a crisp, tailored navy-blue coat over a charcoal suit. He didn't wear dark glasses. He walked with absolute, unhurried grace, his icy blue eyes sweeping across the docks until they settled directly on Elena and Mia.

Elena gasped, her breath catching in her throat, her eyes widening in utter disbelief.

Alessandro was walking toward her. He wasn't holding a cane. He wasn't relying on a guide dog. He navigated the treacherous, puddle-filled terrain with the effortless precision of a apex predator, stepping directly around a deep puddle of oil without even looking down.

“A-Alessandro...?” Elena whispered, her voice trembling.

Alessandro stopped two feet away from her. He dropped to one knee on the wet gravel, completely unconcerned about ruining his multi-thousand-dollar suit. He looked into Elena’s eyes, his face softened by a warmth and relief so intense it made her heart skip a beat.

“I am here, Elena,” Alessandro said, his deep, rumbling voice filled with an unmistakable, fierce tenderness.

He reached out his broad, warm hand and gently touched Mia’s small, wet cheek.

“Are you hurt, little one?” Alessandro asked the little girl gently.

Mia looked at him, her wide brown eyes blinking in awe. She reached out her tiny hand and touched the edge of his cheek, right beside his left eye.

“Mr. Alessandro...” Mia whispered, her small voice ringing clear in the night air. “Your eyes aren't dark anymore. You can see me?”

Alessandro smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his stern, intimidating features into something extraordinary.

“Yes, Mia,” Alessandro murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I can see you. You are wearing your pink jacket with the yellow duck button.”

Mia let out a joyful gasp, throwing her small arms around Alessandro’s neck. Alessandro gathered the little girl into his powerful arms, pulling her against his chest, before looking up into Elena’s tear-filled eyes.

“How... how is this possible?” Elena stammered, tears streaming down her face as she looked into the brilliant blue eyes that had been hidden from the world for five long years. “Your eyes... the doctor said...”

“The doctor lied,” Alessandro said softly, reaching out his free hand to gently cup Elena’s cheek, his thumb wiping away a stray tear. “And the woman who hired him thought she could take the only light I had left in this world.”

He stood up smoothly, holding Mia securely on his hip, while extending his hand to pull Elena to her feet.

Viktor stepped up beside Alessandro, holding a secure satellite phone. “Boss. Bernardo Romano just boarded his private yacht at Navy Pier. He’s attempting to clear Chicago waters before we can freeze his assets.”

Alessandro’s face hardened, the warmth vanishing in an instant, replaced by a cold, lethal resolve.

He looked at Elena, his grip on her hand firm and unbreakable.

“Take Elena and Mia to the lakeside estate,” Alessandro commanded Viktor. “Deploy three security squads around the perimeter. Nobody enters without my personal authorization.”

“And you, boss?” Viktor asked.

Alessandro looked out toward the dark horizon of Lake Michigan, his stormy eyes flashing like lightning.

“I am going to Navy Pier,” Alessandro said softly. “It’s time to settle a five-year debt.”
