Chapter 10 - Forever in the Light

One year later.
The summer sun shone brilliantly over the cliffs of the Lakeside Estate, turning the surface of Lake Michigan into a shimmering sea of melted diamonds.
On the manicured green lawn near the edge of the cliff, a cozy white wooden gazebo stood surrounded by vibrant rose gardens and leafy shade trees.
A gentle breeze blew off the lake, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and fresh pine.
Elena sat on a cushioned bench inside the gazebo, wearing a comfortable white summer dress. She was leaning back, her hands resting gently over her visibly rounded stomach—pregnant with their second child, a baby boy due in two months.
Beside her, five-year-old Mia was playing merrily on the grass with Barnaby, a fluffy golden retriever puppy that Alessandro had given her for her birthday.
Footsteps sounded on the stone path.
Alessandro walked into the gazebo, carrying a tray with fresh lemonade and a bowl of sweet strawberries. He had discarded his formal suits, wearing a soft white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up and comfortable trousers.
He set the tray down on the table, sitting beside Elena and wrapping his broad, warm arm around her shoulders, pulling her gently against his side.
“How are my three favorite people doing today?” Alessandro asked softly, his thumb gently caressing her swollen stomach.
Elena smiled, leaning her head against his broad chest, listening to the steady, comforting rhythm of his heart.
“We are perfect, Alessandro,” Elena murmured softly, looking up into his brilliant blue eyes. “Completely perfect.”
Mia came running into the gazebo, giggling as the puppy trotted happily behind her. She climbed up onto the bench between Alessandro and Elena, pressing her hand against Elena’s stomach.
“Daddy! The baby kicked!” Mia squealed in delight.
Alessandro placed his broad hand over Mia’s small hand, feeling the soft, energetic kick of his unborn son beneath Elena’s dress.
A deep, overwhelming wave of gratitude and peace swept over Alessandro.
He looked down at his daughter’s joyous face, then looked into the beautiful hazel eyes of the woman who had transformed his entire world.
He remembered the cold, terrifying years he had spent sitting alone in the dark, believing he was destined for eternal isolation.

Now, surrounded by the warmth of his wife’s love, the laughter of his children, and the endless bright horizon of the lake, Alessandro knew that the darkness had been banished forever.
He leaned down and kissed Elena’s lips—a slow, sweet, eternal promise of devotion—while the afternoon sun covered their family in a brilliant, warm, and everlasting light.
