Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

The Lakeside Estate was a sprawling, stone mansion built on a secluded cliff overlooking the northern shore of Lake Michigan. Surrounded by dense pine forests and protected by high stone walls, it was the most secure property in the Moretti domain—a sanctuary reserved only for the inner family.
It was 2:00 AM when Alessandro’s convoy pulled through the wrought-iron gates.
Inside the grand living room, a warm fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace.
Elena sat on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, holding a mug of warm tea. Mia was fast asleep beside her, tucked safely under a wool blanket, her little yellow flashlight clutched tightly in her tiny hand.
The heavy oak doors opened softly.
Alessandro stepped inside. He had removed his blood-stained coat and changed into a clean black sweater and dark trousers. He looked tired, but the moment his eyes landed on Elena, every trace of tension drained from his broad shoulders.
He motioned for his guards to remain outside, closing the door quietly behind him.
He walked across the soft rug, stopping right in front of the sofa.
Elena looked up at him, her hazel eyes filled with a mixture of awe, relief, and a deep, unspoken emotion that had been growing between them over the past two years.
“It’s over,” Alessandro said gently, sitting down on the edge of the sofa beside her. “Bernardo, Vance, and Isabella will never threaten you or Mia again. You are completely safe.”
Elena released a long, shuddering breath, setting her teacup down on the table. Tears welled in her eyes once more.
“Alessandro... I still can't believe it,” she whispered, reaching out hesitantly. “All this time... you were suffering in the dark, and I didn't know.”
Alessandro took her small hand in his, bringing it to his lips and kissing her knuckles with deep, reverent tenderness.
“You were the only reason I survived it, Elena,” Alessandro confessed softly, his blue eyes shining in the firelight. “When I was blind, I lived in a world of cold, calculating shadows. Everyone who approached me wanted something—money, power, influence. But then you came to this house.”
He looked down at sleeping Mia, then back into Elena’s eyes.
“You didn't look at me as a ruthless mob boss,” Alessandro continued, his voice thick with raw honesty. “You cared for me with a gentle, selfless warmth that I had never known in my entire life. You brought Mia into my quiet rooms, and her laughter... her innocence... it brought light back into my life long before my eyes could ever see again.”
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Alessandro...”
“When I realized Vance was poisoning me,” Alessandro whispered, leaning closer to her, “I knew I had to play the blind man until I had enough evidence to destroy them all without putting you in danger. But today... when Isabella tried to take you...”
His hand moved up to cup her cheek, his fingers stroking her soft skin with intense devotion.
“I realized that without you, Elena, my sight means nothing,” Alessandro whispered. “I love you. I have loved you since the moment I heard your voice in my study two years ago.”
Elena let out a soft gasp, tears spilling over her lashes as she leaned into his warm touch.

“I love you too, Alessandro,” Elena wept softly, smiling through her tears. “I’ve loved you for so long.”
Alessandro leaned down, and his lips met hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that erased every shadow of fear, pain, and betrayal, binding their hearts together forever in the warm light of the crackling fire.
