Chapter 6 - The Trap Begins to Close

The night fell fast over the Hudson River, bringing with it a thick, blinding fog that rolled up from the water and wrapped the Ventresca estate in a cold, white shroud.

Inside the mansion, the mood was tense, though only Mrs. Hart and Alessandro understood why.

The heavy iron gates were locked electronically. Four armed guards in dark coats patrolled the snow-covered grounds with flashlights, their weapons concealed beneath their jackets.

In the kitchen, Clara was finishing the dinner dishes. Toby was upstairs in their suite, fast asleep after an exhausting afternoon of schoolwork.

Bella was sitting in the library on the ground floor, reading an old leather-bound novel by the fire. The quiet warmth of the room was comforting, though she felt an odd, restless energy in the house. Her father had returned home early—something he hadn't done in months—and had spent the last two hours locked in his study with Mrs. Hart, speaking in hushed, urgent tones.

At eight o'clock, Alessandro walked into the library.

Bella looked up from her book, her expression instantly shifting back into her guarded, reserved mask. "Is something wrong? The guards outside are walking around the windows like they're looking for something."

Alessandro walked over to the hearth, looking down at his daughter. For the first time in weeks, he didn't see her as the cruel, spoiled girl who had fired eleven maids. He saw the helpless little girl who had cried in his arms at her mother’s funeral.

"It's just security protocol, Bella," Alessandro said, his voice softer than usual. "The weather is bad, and we had a minor perimeter alert near the road."

Bella frowned slightly, her sharp dark eyes searching his face. "You came home early for a perimeter alert?"

"I came home because I wanted to make sure you were safe," Alessandro said quietly.

Bella looked down at her book, her fingers tightening slightly on the leather cover. She didn't offer a sharp comeback. She didn't roll her eyes. The simple, honest admission from her father felt strange, almost foreign, in a house that had been silent for so long.

"I'm fine," Bella murmured. "Clara made soup."

Alessandro smiled faintly—a real, genuine smile. "I know. I smelled it."

Before he could say another word, the heavy mahogany door of the library swung open, and Mrs. Hart stepped inside, her face pale, her hands trembling slightly as she held a landline phone receiver.

"Alessandro," Mrs. Hart said, her voice shaking. "It's Mateo. On line two."

Alessandro stepped past his daughter and took the receiver. "Speak."

"Alessandro!" Mateo’s voice cracked through the static, filled with pure panic. "Get out of the house! Get out right now!"

Alessandro’s body went rigid. "What are you talking about?"

"It was a diversion!" Mateo yelled over the sound of a rushing engine in the background. "The black SUV near the gate two days ago was a scout! They didn't come to break through the gate—they came through the old drainage tunnel under the east garden! The old timber baron’s route from the river!"

Alessandro’s blood ran cold. The estate had an old 1920s utility tunnel that led from the Hudson shore directly up into the basement of the mansion—a route that had been sealed off with iron bars thirty years ago.

"The bars were cut this afternoon," Mateo shouted. "August’s men are already inside the perimeter! They cut the main power lines thirty seconds ago—!"

Before Mateo could finish his sentence, the world went dead black.

The grand crystal chandeliers in the foyer cut out instantly. The crackling fire in the library was the only remaining source of light, casting long, violent shadows across the wood-paneled walls.

Down in the basement, a heavy, metallic THUD echoed up through the floorboards—the sound of a heavy door being kicked open from the service entrance.

Bella gasped, jumping out of her chair, dropping her book onto the rug. "Dad! What's happening?!"

Alessandro didn't answer. In a single, fluid motion, he reached beneath his arm, pulled a heavy black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, racked the slide with a sharp, lethal CLICK, and pushed Bella behind his massive frame.

"Mrs. Hart," Alessandro commanded, his voice cold, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "Take Bella up to the third floor guest suite. Lock the reinforced door. Ms. Vance is up there."

"No!" Bella cried out, grabbing her father’s arm in pure terror. "Dad, come with us! Who is down there?!"

"Go!" Alessandro ordered, shoving her toward Mrs. Hart. "Now!"

From the dark hallway outside the library, heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Heavy boots. Men moving with tactical precision.

A raspy, old voice—dripping with ancient malice and deep, arrogant authority—echoed through the dark mansion.

"Alessandro!" August Moretti’s voice called out from the foyer. "Come out, little Don! Let's talk about the harbor before my boys burn this pretty house to the ground!"
