Chapter 8 - The Fallen Don

The slide down the metal chute was fast, cold, and terrifying.

Bella plunged through three stories of absolute darkness before tumbling out of the square opening and landing hard in a massive, soft pile of folded hotel towels inside the basement linen room.

She gasped for air, her body bruised, her mind screaming with horror.

"Bella!" Mrs. Hart’s voice whispered from the corner of the dark room.

Mrs. Hart was crouching behind a massive canvas laundry cart, holding Toby tightly against her chest. The little boy had his face buried in her sweater, quiet as a mouse.

Bella scrambled out of the towel pile, her knees shaking as she crouched beside them.

"Where’s Mom?" Toby whispered, looking up with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Where’s my mom?"

Bella looked at the little boy. She felt a sharp, agonizing pain in her throat—a pain deeper than anything she had felt since her mother’s funeral. Clara was upstairs alone, standing between two armed hitmen and the chute, using her broad body as a shield so a spoiled girl who had humiliated her could live.

"She’s... she’s holding the door, Toby," Bella choked out, wrapping her arm around the boy’s shoulders, pulling him close. "She’s fighting for us."

Above them, the faint sound of a heavy struggle echoed through the vents—screams, the shattering of wood, a heavy thud, and then... absolute silence.

Bella squeezed her eyes shut, hot tears running down her cheeks into Toby’s hair.

"We have to get out," Mrs. Hart whispered, pointing toward the heavy steel door that led out into the boiler room corridor. "The basement exit leads to the garden."

Bella nodded. For the first time in her life, she didn't wait for someone else to take the lead. She stood up first, holding Toby’s hand tightly in hers. She felt a strange, new sensation rising inside her cold chest—a hot, burning spark of pure determination born from Clara’s sacrifice.

She opened the linen room door carefully, stepping out into the dark boiler corridor.

The room was lit only by the red emergency lights of the heating system. The air smelled of hot iron, oil, and gunpowder.

Ten feet away, slumped against the massive steel boiler, was Alessandro.

"Dad!" Bella screamed, dropping to her knees beside him.

Alessandro’s face was covered in sweat and blood from a deep cut along his hairline. His custom suit jacket was torn, his breathing heavy and ragged. Beside his hand lay his empty pistol, its slide locked back. He had fought three men in the dark foyer before being driven down into the basement by superior numbers.

He opened his dark eyes slowly, looking up at his daughter.

"Bella..." Alessandro rasped, his voice weak, blood staining his white shirt near his shoulder. "You're... you're safe..."

"Dad, don't talk!" Bella wept, pressing her hand against his wounded shoulder to stop the bleeding. "You're hurt! We have to go!"

"I can't move, tesoro," Alessandro murmured, his jaw clenching in pain. "They... they took August up to the library. He’s setting the house on fire... he wants to burn the records..."

Before Bella could reply, heavy footsteps clicked against the concrete floor behind them.

Out of the shadows stepped August Moretti.

The old patriarch looked frail yet terrifying in his long dark wool coat, his silver hair slicked back, his pale, ancient eyes burning with sociopathic triumph. He held a small, silver-plated revolver in his right hand. Beside him stood his last remaining bodyguard—a tall, broad-shouldered man carrying a gallon can of gasoline.

"Ah," August rasped, his cold voice echoing off the concrete walls like a ghost from the past. "The little princess finally comes out of her tower."

Alessandro tried to rise, his hand reaching blindly for his empty gun, but August stepped forward and kicked the weapon across the floor with his leather shoe.

"Stay down, Alessandro," August said smoothly. "You fought well for a man who spent ten years playing corporate executive. But your empire ends tonight."

August turned his revolver toward Bella, who stood up slowly, stepping directly in front of her bleeding father and small Toby.

She was trembling, but she didn't look down. She looked right into the cold, ancient eyes of the man who had destroyed her home.

"Kill me," Bella said, her voice shaking, but clear and unwavering. "Leave my father and the boy alone. I'm the one you want for ransom anyway. Take me."

August chuckled—a dry, raspy sound. "Ransom? My dear girl, I'm seventy-eight years old. I don't need ransom money anymore. I need a lesson. I need New York to remember what happens when a family turns its back on the old ways."

He raised the silver revolver, aiming it directly at Bella’s forehead.

"No!" Alessandro roared from the floor, trying to throw his body in front of hers, but his wounded shoulder gave out, dropping him into the dirt.

Bella closed her eyes. She thought of her mother’s gentle face. She thought of her father’s tired eyes. She thought of Clara Vance standing in the dark pantry with a rolling pin in her hand, choosing to save a girl who didn't deserve it.

I'm sorry, Mom, Bella thought softly. I tried at the end.

CLICK.

A sharp, metallic sound echoed through the boiler room.

Not the sound of a gun firing.

The sound of a heavy wooden door being smashed off its hinges from the top of the basement stairs!

"Hey! Old man!" a rich, loud, furious Brooklyn voice roared from the shadows behind August.

August and his bodyguard spun around in shock.

Standing at the top of the concrete basement steps, illuminated by the red emergency lights, was Clara Vance.

Her dark blue scrubs were torn, her hair was completely down, flowing wildly around her broad shoulders, and her face was covered in soot and blood from a cut on her cheek.

In her massive, strong right hand, she held a heavy, iron fire extinguisher—a forty-pound steel cylinder she held like a toy.

"Get away from my kids!" Clara screamed.

With a terrifying, powerful roar born of pure motherly rage, Clara charged down the concrete steps like an unstoppable force of nature!
