Chapter 9 - The Power of Iron

What happened next lasted less than ten seconds, but to Bella, it moved in slow motion.
August’s bodyguard raised his weapon toward the stairs, but he was far too slow.
Clara cleared the final three steps in a single leap, swinging the forty-pound iron fire extinguisher in a wide, horizontal arc with the full momentum of her broad, two-hundred-pound frame behind it!
CRACK!
The heavy steel cylinder struck the bodyguard squarely in the chest with the sound of a car hitting a brick wall!
The man was lifted completely off his feet, his gun flying out of his hand, as his body crashed violently into the steel boiler and slumped unconscious onto the concrete floor.
August Moretti gasped, his old eyes widening in absolute terror as he raised his silver revolver toward Clara’s face.
"Die, you peasant—!" August shrieked.
Before he could pull the trigger, Bella acted.
Driven by a sudden, violent surge of instinct she didn't know she possessed, Bella threw her slender body forward, grabbing August’s raised arm with both hands and yanking it down with all her weight!
The revolver went off—BANG!—the bullet striking the concrete floor, sending sparks flying into the air!
August stumbled backward, losing his balance on the slick floor.
Clara didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, grabbed August by the lapels of his expensive wool coat with one massive hand, lifted the seventy-eight-year-old man two inches off the ground, and slammed him back against the stone wall with a thud that knocked every drop of air out of his lungs!
The silver revolver fell from his limp fingers, clattering onto the concrete.
"Don't you ever," Clara hissed, her hazel eyes burning like molten gold inches from August’s pale, terrified face, "touch a child in my presence."
August choked, his hands clawing weakly at Clara’s powerful wrists, but her grip was made of absolute iron. He looked into her eyes and saw no fear, no respect, no hesitation—only the raw, unyielding vengeance of a mother protecting her family.
From the top of the basement stairs, a sudden flood of bright white flashlight beams cut through the gloom.
"Police! Don't move! Federal agents!"
A dozen heavily armed SWAT officers and Ventresca security guards thundered down the steps, their rifles raised, red laser sights dancing across the walls. Leading them was Mateo, his gun drawn, his face pale with relief as he saw Alessandro alive on the floor.
"Clear! The building is secure!" an officer yelled.
Two agents rushed forward, grabbing August as Clara released her grip. The old patriarch collapsed onto his knees, coughing violently, as steel handcuffs were snapped around his wrists.
The fight was over.
The mansion was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of emergency vehicles. The blizzard outside had finally stopped, leaving a quiet, clear night sky filled with cold stars.
Paramedics worked quickly in the grand foyer, treating Alessandro’s wounded shoulder before loading him onto a gurney.
Standing near the front steps, wrapped in a heavy thermal blanket, was Bella.
She was shivering, but not from the cold. Her eyes were fixed on the doorway where Clara was stepping out into the night air, accompanied by a paramedic who was wrapping a clean bandage around the cut on her cheek. Toby was clinging tightly to Clara’s hand, refusing to let go.
Bella stepped away from the paramedics, walking slowly across the snow-covered driveway toward Clara.
Clara turned and saw her approaching. The terrifying, ferocious warrior who had smashed a hitman with a fire extinguisher five minutes ago was gone, replaced once again by the warm, sensible woman in torn scrubs.
"You okay, honey?" Clara asked softly, her voice raspy from smoke.
Bella stopped two feet from her. She looked at Clara’s bandage, at her torn scrubs, at her bruised hands.
Then, for the first time in six years, Isabella Ventresca dropped every shield, every lie, every bitter piece of pride she had carried.
She threw her arms around Clara’s broad waist, buried her face into Clara’s shoulder, and began to sob uncontrollably—deep, violent, healing tears that washed away six years of grief and isolation.
Clara froze for a fraction of a second, surprised. Then, a warm, gentle smile touched her lips. She wrapped her large, strong arms around the slender girl, holding her tight against her chest, resting her chin on Bella’s dark hair as the cold wind blew past them.
"I'm sorry," Bella wept into Clara’s shoulder. "I'm so sorry for everything I said..."
"Shh," Clara whispered, stroking Bella’s long, tangled hair with a gentle hand. "It's over, baby. It's all over. You're safe now."

A few feet away, lying on the ambulance gurney, Alessandro watched them.
Tears welled in the dark eyes of the formidable mob boss—not from the pain of his bullet wound, but from the quiet, miraculous sight of his daughter finally coming back to life in the arms of the woman he had hired to clean his floors.
