Chapter 7 - The Invasion of the Mansion

The darkness inside the Ventresca mansion was thick, suffocating, and absolute, broken only by the pale moonlight filtering through the snow-dusted windows and the flickering orange glow of the library fire.

Mrs. Hart grabbed Bella by the wrist, pulling the terrified nineteen-year-old out through the side servant's door into the back staircase.

"Keep moving!" Mrs. Hart whispered urgently, her age vanishing as adrenaline surged through her veins. "Up the stairs! Don't look back!"

Bella was breathing in short, terrified gasps. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, her hands trembling as she stumbled up the carpeted steps in the pitch black.

Down below, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the front foyer, followed by the deafening, thunderous BOOM of a high-caliber gunshot!

Bella screamed, covering her ears. "Dad!"

"Keep moving, Bella!" Mrs. Hart hissed, dragging her up to the second floor landing.

Above them, on the third floor, a door swung open.

A bright beam of light cut through the darkness—Clara, holding a heavy metal flashlight in one hand and a wooden rolling pin from the kitchen in the other. Her face was set in hard, unyielding lines.

"In here!" Clara called out in a sharp, urgent whisper, waving them toward the guest suite.

Mrs. Hart and Bella scrambled up the final flight of steps, ducking into the room. Clara instantly slammed the heavy oak door shut, throwing two heavy brass deadbolts into place and sliding a reinforced security bar across the frame.

Inside, Toby was sitting on the bed, wrapped in a heavy blanket, his eyes wide with fear, clutching a flashlight to his chest.

"Mom?" Toby whimpered. "Is it thunder?"

"Shh, baby," Clara said softly, stepping over to the bed and giving him a quick, firm kiss on the forehead. "Stay under the blanket with your flashlight. Everything is fine."

She turned back to the door, her hazel eyes scanning Mrs. Hart and Bella.

Bella was slumping against the wall, her face ghostly white, her long hair wild, her chest heaving as tears spilled over her lashes. She looked completely broken, stripped of every ounce of the cold, arrogant defense mechanism she had carried for six years.

"They're inside," Mrs. Hart gasped, leaning against the dresser to catch her breath. "August Moretti’s men. They cut the main power and came up through the basement."

Clara’s jaw tightened. She looked at Bella, who was staring at the floor with wide, hollow eyes.

"Is your father down there alone?" Clara asked softly.

"He... he has a gun," Bella choked out, her voice trembling violently. "He told us to run. I heard a shot, Clara... I heard a shot!"

Clara set her rolling pin down on the table. She reached out, grabbed Bella by both shoulders, and gave her a firm, gentle shake to force the girl to look into her eyes.

"Listen to me, Isabella," Clara said, her voice dropping into that deep, unshakable motherly tone that had disarmed Bella weeks ago. "Your father is a very powerful, very dangerous man when he needs to be. He knows this house better than they do. He’s buying time for his security team to get here."

Bella looked into Clara’s hazel eyes. In the dim beam of the flashlight, Clara looked like a mountain—solid, unyielding, and utterly terrified of nothing.

"He's going to die because of me," Bella sobbed, her composure crumbling entirely. "I've been so horrible to him... I told him I hated him... I told him he should have died instead of Mom..."

"He knows you didn't mean it," Clara said softly, wiping a tear from Bella’s cheek with her warm, thumb. "Parents know when their children are just hurting. Now stop crying and help me block this door."

Before they could push the heavy mahogany wardrobe against the entrance, a loud, heavy boot kicked the outside of the oak door!

BANG!

The heavy wood groaned against the brass deadbolts.

Toby gasped, pulling the blanket over his head.

Outside in the dark hallway, a voice rasped—a young, aggressive man with a thick Chicago accent. "Hey! Old man said the kid is up here! Break the lock!"

BANG!

Another heavy kick rattled the door frame. Dust rained down from the ceiling moulding.

Bella shrieked, backing away toward the bed. "They're going to get in!"

Clara didn't hesitate. She looked around the room. The third-floor guest suite had a small service pantry attached to the back wall—a tiny room used by staff to store extra linens and cleaning chemicals, which contained a hidden laundry chute that dropped straight down four floors into the basement linen room.

Clara grabbed Bella’s wrist. "In the pantry! Move!"

She shoved Bella and Mrs. Hart into the narrow pantry, grabbing Toby under her arm like a football and pulling him inside behind them. She locked the small pantry door just as the main bedroom door gave way with a violent splintering of wood!

Through the cracks in the pantry door, Clara saw two heavy-set men in dark leather jackets step into the room, carrying flashlights and handguns.

"Clear!" one shouted. "Check the bathroom!"

Inside the narrow pantry, the air was hot, cramped, and smelled of detergent and bleach.

Bella was trembling so violently her teeth were chattering. "Clara... what do we do?"

Clara pointed to the square metal door set into the wall—the laundry chute. It was eighteen inches wide, designed for heavy canvas laundry bags.

"Toby goes first," Clara whispered, her voice completely calm despite the madness six inches away. "Toby, listen to Mom. You slide down the chute. It lands in a big pile of soft towels in the basement linen closet. Once you hit the bottom, you crawl into the laundry bin and hide until I come get you. Understand?"

Toby looked at his mother, nodded bravely, and squeezed his small body through the metal door, sliding down into the dark opening with a soft whoosh.

"Mrs. Hart, you're next," Clara whispered.

"I'm sixty-eight, Clara," Mrs. Hart murmured with a faint, bitter smile. "I'll break my hip."

"Better a hip than a bullet," Clara said, helping the older woman climb into the narrow chute. Mrs. Hart slid down into the darkness.

Now only Clara and Bella remained in the tiny pantry.

Outside, heavy footsteps approached the pantry door. A hand rattled the brass handle.

"Locked!" a guard yelled. "They're in here! Get the crowbar!"

Clara turned to Bella. "Your turn. Get in."

Bella looked at the narrow, dark metal opening. She looked at Clara’s massive frame.

Then, Bella froze.

She looked at Clara’s wide hips and broad shoulders. In an instant, Bella realized the horrifying truth that Clara had been hiding.

The laundry chute was eighteen inches wide.

Bella was slender; she could easily fit. Mrs. Hart and Toby had fit.

Clara Vance—built with the broad, powerful frame of a woman who weighed over two hundred pounds—could never fit through an eighteen-inch metal chute.

"Clara..." Bella whispered, her eyes widening in absolute horror as tears spilled over her face. "You... you can't fit."

Clara didn't deny it. She offered a small, quiet, sad smile in the darkness of the pantry.

"I'm a big girl, honey," Clara whispered gently. "Always have been."

"No!" Bella sobbed, grabbing Clara’s scrub top with both hands. "No! I'm not leaving you! They'll kill you!"

"They want you, Bella," Clara said, her voice filled with an absolute, unshakeable motherly resolve that shattered every piece of selfish defense Bella had built over six years. "They want the Don’s daughter for ransom. They don't care about the maid. Now get in that chute!"

"I spent four weeks calling you names!" Bella wept hysterically, clutching Clara’s shirt. "I threw glass at your feet! I treated you like trash! Why are you doing this for me?!"

Clara reached out, gently cupping Bella’s face in her large, warm hands, looking straight into the eyes of the girl who had tried to ruin her life.

"Because you're just a girl who misses her mom," Clara whispered softly, her hazel eyes glistening with quiet tears. "And because nobody deserves to die alone in the dark. Now go!"

Outside, the crowbar smashed into the wood of the pantry door with a deafening CRACK! The wood split down the center!

Clara didn't wait. She grabbed Bella by the shoulders and pushed her firmly into the laundry chute.

May you like

"Clara!" Bella screamed as she slid down into the dark shaft.

The last thing Bella saw before she dropped into the darkness was Clara Vance standing tall in front of the splintering door, picking up a heavy bottle of industrial drain cleaner in one hand and her wooden rolling pin in the other, facing the dark shadows with a wide, terrifyingly brave smile.
