Chapter 1 - The Envelope Unsealed

The silence inside the grand ballroom of the Bellaforte estate was so heavy that the quiet hum of the crystal chandeliers seemed deafening. Nearly two hundred members of the syndicate, elite socialites, and loyal soldiers stood frozen, their eyes locked on the woman standing at the center of the stage.

Temperance Ashkam held her ground, her simple dress standing in stark contrast to the floor-length silk gowns and custom tuxedos filling the room. Her hands, usually so warm and reassuring when comforting the four grieving Bellaforte boys, trembled slightly. Yet her eyes were clear.

Mars Bellaforte stood motionless, the thick parchment envelope resting in his palm. The handwriting across the front was unmistakably Adelina’s—sweeping, graceful, and carrying the ghost of a woman whose loss had nearly torn his world apart.

Seraphina Bellaforte’s smirk began to curdle. She took a step toward her brother, her voice dropping lower into the microphone. "Mars, don't let this woman play you. She manipulated her way into your home after your wife died. She targeted your broken sons when they were at their weakest!"

"Silence, Seraphina," Mars said.

His voice wasn't raised, but the sheer coldness in it cut through the room like a blade. He didn't look at his sister. He didn't look at the whispering guests or the flashing phone cameras. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Tami.

"Break the seal," Tami said softly, her voice carrying over the silent crowd. "She asked me to give it to you when the time was right. She told me I would know when that moment came. I thought today... when you were honoring the family... was supposed to be that day. I didn't know your sister would turn it into a trial."

Mars tore the wax seal. The quiet rustle of the paper echoed across the stage.

He unfolded the letter. Adelina’s familiar scent—faint lavender and sweet cream—seemed to drift from the pages, cutting through the heavy smell of expensive cologne and vintage wine in the room.

Mars read silently, his jaw tight, the muscle twitching in his cheek.

My Dearest Mars,

If you are reading this, it means I am long gone, and the dark shadow that always haunts the Bellaforte name has settled over our home once more. I know how you grieve, my love. You lock your heart behind steel and stone. You become the Boss, not the father. And our boys... oh, my poor boys will be shattering in silence.

I am writing this from my room at the hospice. There is a young woman here. Her name is Temperance Ashkam. She does not know who I am. She does not know the power or the blood attached to the name Bellaforte. She simply holds my hand when the pain becomes unbearable. She listens to me talk about Damian’s temper, Nico’s silence, Gabriel’s tears, and Julian’s hidden fears.

She has a soul made of light, Mars. Pure, gentle, and utterly unshakable.

I asked her to make me a promise—that if she ever saw my family drowning, she would extend a hand. I did not tell her how to find you. I left that to fate.

Mars, if she is in your life now, do not let your paranoia destroy the miracle she brings. I am giving you permission to let go of my memory. I am giving you permission to live again. Let her heal our sons. And if your hardened heart can manage it... let her heal you.

Forever yours, Adelina.

A heavy, suffocating silence gripped the room as Mars slowly folded the letter and placed it inside his inner jacket pocket, right over his heart.

Seraphina frowned, sensing the shift in the air. "Mars? What does it say? Show it to the family! She could have forged—"

Mars moved so fast it blurred.

In three steps, he closed the distance between himself and Seraphina. He grabbed the leather folder from her hands and ripped it in half, tossing the torn shreds onto the polished stage floor.

"You brought shame into my house today, Seraphina," Mars said, his voice echoing through the entire hall without the aid of a microphone. "You tried to destroy the woman who put my family back together."

Seraphina stumbled back, her face pale. "She’s a nobody, Mars! A former hospice worker! A plus-size housekeeper who doesn't belong in our world! Look at her! Look at this family! She is beneath us!"

"She is the foundation of this house," a sharp voice broke in.

Damian, the eldest son—known throughout the syndicate for his ruthless temper—stepped up onto the stage. He stood beside Tami, his broad shoulders blocking her from Seraphina's sight.

"She prayed with us when we were drowning in grief," Damian snapped, glaring at his aunt with raw hatred. "Where were you, Aunt Seraphina? Shopping in Milan? Counting your cut of the family business?"

Nico, the quiet second son, stepped onto the stage next, followed closely by Gabriel and little Julian. The four brothers formed a protective wall around Tami.

"She saved us," Gabriel murmured, his eyes red but fierce. "She stayed when everyone else was terrified of us."

Seraphina looked around, searching for support among the elders of the syndicate, but the tide had completely turned. The raw emotion of the four Bellaforte heirs was undeniable.

Mars walked until he stood directly in front of Tami. The intimidating Mafia don, feared across the coast, reached out and gently took her soft hand in his rough, calloused palm.

He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the syndicate rules.

He lifted her hand and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to her knuckles.

"Temperance Ashkam," Mars declared, turning to face the entire room of two hundred high-ranking mobsters and high-society elite. His arm wrapped firmly around Tami’s waist, pulling her flush against his side. "She is not the housekeeper. She is not a servant."

Tami gasped softly, looking up at his sharp, handsome profile.

Mars raised his chin, his dark eyes sweeping over the room with absolute authority. "From this moment on, she is protected under the full authority of the Bellaforte name. Anyone who disrespects her, disrespects me. She belongs at my side."

Gasps rippled through the audience. Seraphina’s jaw dropped in absolute shock.

Tami’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked at the four boys, who were all smiling at her with fierce pride, and then up at Mars, whose grip on her waist was possessive, warm, and utterly unyielding.
