Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Syndicate

The aftermath of the gala was a storm of political tension. While the public declaration of Mars's protection over Tami sent shockwaves through the crime families, it also painted a massive target on her back.
In the days following the event, the Bellaforte mansion felt different. The tension that had plagued the hallways for two years was gone, replaced by a quiet warmth. Tami tried to return to her normal routine—cooking meals for the boys, helping Julian with his homework, and managing the household—but Mars refused to let her treat herself as staff any longer.
"You don't clean the floors anymore, Tami," Mars said one evening, walking into the kitchen.
Tami was wiping down the granite counter, wearing her favorite soft apron over her floral dress. She turned, flushing slightly as Mars approached. He had shed his suit jacket, rolling his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his elbows, revealing the intricate dark tattoos that spanned his forearms.
"I like keeping busy, Mars," Tami said softly, setting the rag down. "And besides... I'm used to working."
Mars closed the distance between them, trapping her against the counter. The sheer size of him was overwhelming, but Tami never felt unsafe around him. He leaned down, his scent of cedarwood, dark tobacco, and rain enveloping her senses.
"Then work on letting me take care of you," he murmured, his thumb reaching out to trace her cheekbone, brushing away a stray lock of her brown hair. "My boys love you. And I..." He paused, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made her breath catch. "I am becoming entirely undone by you, Temperance."
Before Tami could answer, the heavy double doors of the kitchen slammed open. Damian rushed in, his phone pressed to his ear, his face dark with rage.
"Dad," Damian said urgently. "We have a problem."
Mars straightened immediately, his gentle demeanor instantly vanishing, replaced by the lethal aura of the syndicate boss. "What is it?"
"Aunt Seraphina didn't go back to her estate," Damian reported, his voice laced with venom. "She met with the Moretti family. She’s claiming you’ve lost your mind over a woman, that you're weak, and that the Bellaforte empire is vulnerable."
Tami felt the blood drain from her face. The Moretti family was the Bellafortes' deadliest rival, a ruthless faction that had been looking for a reason to start a territory war for years.
"She’s desperate," Mars said coldly. "She lost her influence inside this house, so she’s trying to burn it down from the outside."
"They're calling an emergency council of the Five Families tonight," Damian added. "They want to challenge your leadership. They're demanding you bring Tami to the council to 'verify her motives.'"
"No," Mars snapped instantly. "She is not stepping foot into that den of vipers."
"Mars, wait," Tami said, stepping forward and laying a hand on his arm. His muscles were taut as steel. "If your sister is using me to make you look weak, then hiding me will only make them think she's right."
"It's too dangerous, Tami," Mars turned to her, his gaze softening briefly. "You don't know these men. They aren't civilized. They don't respect rules unless blood is drawn."
"I survived working in hospice care, watching families break apart at their worst," Tami said firmly, her eyes locked onto his. "And I spent six months helping four grieving boys learn how to love again. I am not afraid of your council, Mars. If they want to look at me, let them look. But I won't let your sister tear down what you've built."
Mars stared at her, stunned by the fierce bravery hidden beneath her soft, voluptuous exterior. A slow, prideful smile touched his lips.
"You truly are something extraordinary," he whispered, cupping her face in his broad hands. "Fine. You'll come with me. But you stay at my side. If anyone so much as breathes near you the wrong way, I'll paint the council room red."
That night, the Bellaforte convoy rolled into the underground compound where the council meetings took place. The room was heavy with smoke, concrete walls reflecting the cold fluorescent lighting. Sitting around a massive mahogany table were the heads of the five major families, flanked by heavily armed bodyguards.
At the far end sat Seraphina, looking smug alongside Don Moretti, an elderly, greasy man with a reputation for extreme violence.
When Mars entered, the room went dead silent. But the real shock came when he pulled out the heavy leather chair beside his own and helped Tami sit down before taking his seat at the head of the table.
"Mars," Don Moretti sneered, leaning forward, his yellowed teeth showing. "You bring a servant to the council table? Your sister tells us you’ve fallen under the spell of a woman who manipulated your dead wife."
"Watch your tongue, Moretti," Mars warned, his voice a low, lethal purr.
"It's true!" Seraphina shouted, standing up and pointing a finger at Tami. "She used Adelina’s death to get into his house! She’s an insider, a spy! How do we know she wasn't sent by another family?"
Tami didn't flinch. She sat tall, resting her hands calmly on the wooden table. She looked directly at Seraphina.
"If I were a spy, Miss Bellaforte," Tami said, her voice clear and carrying through the tense room, "I certainly wouldn't have spent my nights patching up your nephews' wounds, cooking meals for a family that forgot how to sit at the same table, or praying for their peace. I would have taken your money months ago when you secretly offered to pay me double to leave."
The room collectively gasped.
Seraphina’s face went crimson. "That's a lie!"
"Is it?" Tami pulled a folded bank slip from her small clutch bag and slid it across the table toward Don Moretti. "Check the account number. That was the bribe your sister tried to offer me three weeks ago to abandon Mars's boys. I kept the paper as proof."
Don Moretti picked up the slip, glanced at it, and then turned a deadly glare toward Seraphina.
"You brought us here on account of a personal grudge?" Moretti growled. "You wasted the council's time because a housekeeper refused your bribe?"
Mars slowly stood up, placing both hands on the table, leaning over the space toward Moretti and Seraphina.
"My sister tried to destroy my household from within," Mars declared, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "And she used the council to do it. Temperance Ashkam has more honor in her small finger than Seraphina has in her entire body."
Mars turned his gaze directly to Seraphina. "You are stripped of the Bellaforte name. You are stripped of your allowance, your properties, and your seat. If I see you in this city after sunrise, not even the council will be able to protect you."
Seraphina trembled, realizing she had completely lost. She looked to Moretti for help, but the old Don simply looked away, disgusted by her failure. Without a word, she turned and fled the room in shame.
Mars turned back to the room, grabbing Tami's hand and pulling her up beside him.

"This woman is the future of the Bellaforte family," Mars announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Any threat to her is a declaration of war against me."
None of the family heads dared to object.
