Chapter 6 - Whispers from Sicily

Victoria’s arrival cast a dark cloud over the estate. Though Mars forbade his mother from speaking disrespectfully to Tami, the Contessa’s presence was a constant reminder of the rigid, unforgiving world Tami had stepped into.
That evening, Victoria summoned Mars and the four boys to the library. Tami had tried to give them space, but as she walked past the heavy wooden doors carrying a tray of tea, she overheard the low, heated arguments inside.
"The Syndicate in Palermo doesn't recognize your marriage, Mars!" Victoria’s voice carried through the oak panels. "To them, you married a servant with no lineage, no power, and no strategic alliance. They view it as a sign that the Bellaforte Don has gone soft."
"Let them think whatever they want," Mars replied coldly. "I rule the American territories. Palermo has no authority here."
"They do when your father’s old pact is involved!" Victoria snapped. "Before your father died, he signed an agreement with the Don of the Cassaro syndicate. If the Bellaforte main line ever lost its strategic standing, the Cassaros had the right to claim thirty percent of our shipping territory—or demand a marriage alliance to seal the bloodline!"
Inside the room, Damian slammed his hand onto the table. "We are already married! Dad is married to Tami!"
"A marriage without the consent of the High Commission in Sicily is considered invalid by traditional law!" Victoria insisted. "Don Cassaro's eldest son is already on a flight here. He isn't coming to negotiate, Mars. He is coming to demand fulfillment of the pact, or he will declare blood-war on your borders."
Tami stood outside the door, the tray trembling slightly in her hands. The reality of Mars’s world hit her with sudden, terrifying weight. Her love for Mars and the boys was unconditional, but in the ruthless hierarchy of the mafia, love meant nothing without power and lineage.
She quietly stepped back from the door and returned to the kitchen. A few minutes later, Mars entered. His face was worn with exhaustion, the stress lines around his eyes deeper than usual.
He walked over to where Tami was standing, wrapping his arms around her from behind and burying his face in the crook of her neck.
"Don't listen to her," Mars whispered softly, feeling the tension in Tami’s body. "I heard you outside the door."
Tami turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark, fierce eyes. "Mars... is she right? Am I making you vulnerable to these people?"

"Never say that," Mars said sternly, cupping her cheeks with his broad, warm hands. "You gave me a reason to live, Tami. You saved my sons. I don't give a damn about ancient pacts or Italian Dons. If Don Cassaro wants my territory, he can try to take it from my cold, dead hands. But no one—no one—invalidates our marriage."
He kissed her deeply, a fierce, protective possession in his touch that momentarily dispelled her doubts. But as Tami lay awake that night listening to the distant storm outside, she knew that trouble was coming for the family she fought so hard to protect.
