Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The quiet mornings at the Bellaforte estate had become Tami’s favorite time of day. Sunlight flooded the broad glass windows of the central dining room, illuminating a space that used to be swallowed in heavy shadows and oppressive silence. Today, the room hummed with life. Gabriel was arguing playfully with Julian over the last toasted brioche, Nico was quietly reviewing his university acceptance letters, and Damian was going over security reports with a softer expression than he’d worn in years.

Mars sat at the head of the long table, a cup of dark coffee in hand, his sharp dark eyes following Tami as she moved gracefully around the room. Dressed in a soft cream knit sweater that hugged her voluptuous curves, she looked every bit the heart of the house.

"You don't need to serve them yourself, Mrs. Bellaforte," Mars said, a subtle, possessive warmth laced through his low voice as he reached out and gently caught her wrist, pulling her toward his lap.

Tami blushed, placing a hand on his shoulder as she leaned down. "I like caring for my family, Mars. You know that."

"Hey, Dad, let her be," Damian teased, smiling over his coffee. "She makes the house actually feel like a home. Don't go ruining it with your brooding."

A rare, brief smile touched Mars’s lips before he pulled Tami close, resting his chin against her shoulder. For the first time in a decade, the Bellaforte syndicate was stable, the boys were thriving, and the long war with rival families had ended.

However, the peace was shattered at noon.

The estate's front gates signaled an unannounced arrival. A sleek, armored black sedan pulled up the winding driveway, flanked by two security escorts. Mars stepped onto the grand portico, his sons gathering behind him with alert, cautious expressions. Tami stood near the door, her heart tightening with a sudden instinct of unease.

The sedan door opened, and an older woman stepped out. She carried herself with regal, terrifying authority, wearing an immaculate black suit with dark pearls around her neck. Her hair was swept back into a tight bun, and her gray eyes were as sharp as polished steel.

The air around Mars turned instantly to ice.

"Mother," Mars said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

It was Contessa Victoria Bellaforte—the matriarch of the family, Mars’s mother, who had been living in self-imposed exile in Sicily for the past five years following the collapse of the internal family council. She had not returned for Adelina’s funeral, nor had she attended Mars’s wedding.

Victoria walked up the grand stone steps, her cane tapping rhythmically against the marble. Her gaze swept over her grandsons, softening only slightly, before landing heavily on Tami standing in the doorway.

"So," Victoria spoke, her voice laced with heavy coldness and elite disdain. "This is the housekeeper you married in such a desperate hurry, Mars. The one who disgraced Seraphina and brought peasant blood into the Bellaforte lineage."

Damian stepped forward instantly, his fists clenching. "Watch how you speak to her, Grandmother."

"Silence, Damian," Victoria commanded without looking at him. "You let a commoner soothe your grief, and now you forget your place in this world."

Mars stepped directly into his mother’s path, his tall, imposing frame blocking her view of Tami entirely. "You are a guest in my home, Mother. If you came here to insult my wife, you can get back into that car and return to Italy."

Victoria stared down her son, her expression unyielding. "I didn't travel three thousand miles to insult anyone, Mars. I came because the Bellaforte name is being dragged through the dirt by your emotional weakness. And because there are debts from your father's past that have finally come due."
