Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Horizon

Life within the Moretti estate settled into a rhythm of unprecedented warmth and luxury, but the outside world was not so easily pacified.

Wealth and power always attracted scavengers, and the sudden expansion of the Moretti bloodline sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of corporate competitors and distant, estranged relatives who had long eyed Victor’s vast fortune.

It started innocently enough—mysterious financial inquiries, blocked regulatory filings for Moretti Global’s new tech acquisitions, and whispers in exclusive country clubs about whether Victor’s newly adopted children possessed legal standing to inherit the primary trust.

Then came the letter.

It arrived on a crisp Tuesday morning, delivered directly to Victor’s private study in a plain manila envelope bearing no return address.

I was dropping off a fresh cup of coffee when I noticed Victor standing by his mahogany desk, reading a single sheet of heavy cardstock paper. His face had gone completely rigid, the color draining from his skin in a way I hadn't seen since the night we met in the basement.

"Dad?" I asked hesitantly, setting the mug down. "Is everything okay?"

Victor folded the paper slowly and slipped it into his desk drawer, forcing a tight, reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Everything is fine, Olivia. Just some routine business nonsense. Nothing for you to worry about. Shouldn't you be getting ready for your algebra tutor?"

I narrowed my eyes. I had spent seven months studying Victor Moretti’s habits; I knew the exact micro-expressions he made when he was preparing for a corporate war.

"That wasn't business," I said quietly. "Who is it?"

Before Victor could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Marcus strode into the room, breathing heavily, holding a ruggedized tactical tablet in his hand.

"Boss, we have a breach on the outer perimeter sensors," Marcus reported without preamble. "A legal team dispatched by Marcus Vance’s estate just filed an emergency injunction in probate court challenging the adoption of the children, claiming past guardianship rights under Elena Russo's distant relatives."

Victor slammed his hand down onto the desk, the heavy wood shuddering under the impact. "Vance? That vulture hasn't stepped foot in Chicago in ten years. He has no legal standing."

"He found a loophole in Elena’s old medical proxy documents," Marcus replied grimly. "And worse... they know about Olivia’s prior status as a minor running an unregistered domicile. They’re trying to weaponize child welfare services to challenge your custody."
