Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Love

That evening, the Moretti estate felt lighter than air.

The victory at the courthouse was broadcast nationwide, cementing not just Victor’s legal custody, but cementing our family as an unbreakable unit. To celebrate, Victor ordered a massive, private family dinner in the grand formal dining room—though the kids immediately begged to ditch the fancy table manners and have an indoor picnic on the living room rug instead.

We sat surrounded by pillows, eating gourmet pizza prepared by the estate's private chef while watching a classic animated movie.

Noah rested his head sleepily against my shoulder, his small eyelids fluttering shut as the movie played on the massive home theater screen. Across the room, Victor sat beside Daniel and Lucas, laughing as they debated the plot of the film.

For the first time in my life, I didn't feel like a runaway foster kid hiding in the shadows. I didn't feel like a servant trying to survive day by day.

I felt safe. I felt loved. I felt like I belonged.

Victor looked over from the couch, catching my eye through the warm, golden light of the living room. He raised his sparkling cider glass in a quiet, private toast to me. I smiled back, lifting my own cup in response.

The doorbell chimed softly in the grand foyer.

Mrs. Gable walked by a moment later, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped package tied with a silver ribbon. She approached Victor and handed it to him quietly.

"What is this?" Victor asked, turning the package over in his hands.

"It was dropped off by a courier at the front gates, sir," Mrs. Gable said. "No return address. Just your name."

Victor carefully slipped a finger under the ribbon, opening the heavy cardstock box. Inside rested a small, leather-bound journal with faded gold lettering on the cover: Elena’s Journal.

The room grew quiet. Victor carefully lifted the cover, opening to the very first page written in Elena Russo’s delicate, familiar handwriting.

He began to read aloud softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion.

May you like

“If you are reading this, Victor, it means you have finally found them. You always were stubborn enough to track down the truth. Take care of our boy. And take care of Olivia—she is the angel who held our world together when everything fell apart.”

A tear slipped from Victor’s eye, catching the amber light of the room. He looked up from the journal, his gaze sweeping over all six children before finally resting on me with an ocean of unspoken gratitude.
