Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Paper

The silence in Caruso’s restaurant was heavy enough to suffocate a man. Outside, the rain had finally broken through the overcast sky, heavy drops slapping against the tall glass windows, reflecting the neon signs of the Chicago waterfront like splatters of red ink.
Damian Caruso slowly released Marco Bellini’s collar. The older man stumbled back, his tailored suit rumpled, gasping for air against the polished mahogany wainscoting.
"Dr. Adrian Keller," Damian repeated. The name tasted like ash in his mouth. He turned to look at Elena, who was standing frozen beside Leah. "Where is Keller now?"
Elena took a slow, trembling breath, her hands clasped tightly over her waitress apron. "He... he left Zurich two months after my delivery. The hospital told me he accepted a research fellowship in North America. I tried to find him. I spent two years looking through medical registries, but I had no money, no legal standing, and no one would take my word over a respected chief of obstetrics."
Damian looked down at Leah. The little girl had not let go of Elena’s apron. Her small blue-gray eyes—the exact shade of Elena’s—were glued to the woman she had just called Mama. Two years of silence broken by a single word that had shattered Damian’s entire existence.
"Marco," Damian said softly, his voice dropping to a register that made his two personal enforcers near the door straighten up instantly. "Where is Adrian Keller?"
Marco swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. "Damian, listen to me. Sofia was desperate. She knew the Syndicate Council was pressuring you. She knew if the other families found out she couldn't give you an heir, they would try to force a divorce or move against your territory. She didn't mean to hurt anyone—"
"WHERE IS KELLER?!" Damian thundered, slamming his fist onto the marble-topped service station. A stack of linen napkins tumbled to the floor.
Leah flinched, shrinking into Elena’s dress. Instantly, Elena dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around the child, shielding her from Damian’s rage.
"Don't yell near her!" Elena snapped, her eyes flashing with a fierce, maternal instinct that surprised even herself. "She’s terrified!"
Damian stopped. The ruthless mafia boss, feared across three states, looked down at the waitress kneeling on his restaurant floor. He saw no fear in Elena’s eyes—only pure, unadulterated protectiveness.
Damian took a slow, deep breath, forcing the fire in his chest back beneath his cold armor. "Marco. You have three seconds to give me a location, or I hand you over to the Rossi family enforcers in New York."
Marco’s face drained of color. "He’s in Boston. Private practice. Sofia set him up with a research lab at St. Jude's Medical Center. He... he receives a quarterly stipend from the Caruso Family Trust."
Elena gasped, her hand clutching Leah’s small shoulder. "You paid him? You paid the man who took my baby?"
"I didn't know!" Damian said, turning to her, his dark eyes filled with a turbulent mix of guilt and anger. "I thought the trust payments were for Sofia’s ongoing medical care! I signed off on dozens of medical vouchers after her accident!"
"Your wife bought my child," Elena whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes, tracing hot tracks down her pale cheeks. "She stole my baby, paid off a doctor, and lied to you... and you let her do it!"
"I didn't know," Damian repeated, his voice cracking slightly—a rare crack in the foundation of a man who never showed weakness. He walked over to Elena and dropped to one knee, bringing himself down to her level. "Elena. Look at me."
Elena met his gaze. Up close, Damian Caruso was terrifyingly intense—sharp jawline, dark hair dusted with silver at the temples, and eyes that had ordered the deaths of a dozen men. But right now, those eyes held a desperate, hollow grief.
"I spent two years believing my daughter was broken because her mother died," Damian said, his voice a ragged whisper. "I spent two years blaming myself for Sofia’s death, thinking Leah’s silence was my punishment. If what you are saying is true... if Keller took her from you..."
He extended a hand toward Leah, but the child pressed her face deeper into Elena’s neck, refusing to look at him.

Damian’s hand hovered in the air for a second before slowly dropping to his knee. A solitary drop of pain flickered across his face before his mask hardened back into steel.
"My car is outside," Damian said, standing up. "We are going to my residence. My personal doctor will perform an immediate, rush DNA comparison. And by midnight, Dr. Adrian Keller will be sitting in my basement."
