Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Lullaby

Upstairs in the nursery, the atmosphere was quiet and warm.
Elena sat on the floor beside the bed, her back leaning against the wooden frame. Leah had finally woken up, but she hadn't cried. She had crawled off the bed and was sitting on the rug right beside Elena, clutching her worn burgundy rabbit in one hand and holding the hem of Elena’s apron in the other.
Mrs. Gable, the housekeeper, had brought up a tray of warm chicken soup, fresh bread, and sliced apples.
"Eat a little, sweetheart," Elena whispered, dipping a spoon into the warm broth and holding it up to Leah’s mouth.
Leah looked at the spoon, then looked up at Elena. She opened her mouth obediently and swallowed the soup. A small, faint smile touched her lips.
"Good girl," Elena praised softly, wiping a drop of broth from the child's chin with a napkin. "My good, clever girl."
Leah reached out her small hand, touching the small silver chain around Elena’s neck. Hanging from the chain was a tarnished silver locket—the only thing Elena possessed from her own mother.
Leah pulled on it gently. "Mama," she whispered again.
Elena felt a fresh wave of tears sting her eyes. She leaned down, pressing her forehead against Leah’s small, soft forehead. "I'm here, my sweet Leah. I'm never letting anyone take you again. I promise you. I swear it on my life."
Leah began to hum again. The soft, rhythmic melody rose in the quiet nursery.
Elena joined in softly, singing the Italian words her mother had taught her:
"Sogna, bambino mio, sotto le stelle..." (Dream, my child, beneath the stars...)
The bedroom door opened slowly.
Damian stood in the doorway. He had taken off his suit jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair slightly disheveled. He looked tired—older than his thirty-four years, stripped of the terrifying authority he carried in the outside world.
He listened to Elena sing. The melody was identical to the faint humming Leah had done in her sleep for two years—the melody Damian had never been able to identify or replicate.
Elena stopped singing when she saw him, her posture immediately hardening into a defensive stance, pulling Leah closer to her side.
"The test came back," Damian said softly from the doorway.
Elena’s heart hammered in her throat. "And?"
"You are her mother," Damian said. The three words were quiet, heavy, and absolute.
Elena closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. Relief washed over her like a warm wave, so intense her whole body trembled. She squeezed Leah tightly, kissing the top of her soft hair over and over.
"So what happens now, Mr. Caruso?" Elena asked, looking up at him with cautious, defensive eyes. "Do you call your lawyers? Do you try to buy me off like your wife tried to buy the doctor?"
Damian walked slowly into the room. He didn't sit on the bed or approach too closely; he sat down on a simple wooden chair near the wall, folding his hands between his knees.
"I have spent my entire life controlling everything around me," Damian said, his voice flat and tired. "My territory, my men, my fortune, my family. But tonight, I realized I have controlled nothing. My life was built on a crime committed by the people I trusted most."
He looked at Elena, his dark eyes raw and honest.
"I will not buy you off, Elena. I will not fight you in a court that I control. I will not take this child away from the woman she belongs to."
Elena blinked in surprise. She had expected a war. She had expected a ruthless mafia boss to threaten her, to hide the child in another country, to use his massive wealth and power to erase her again.
"You're... letting us go?" Elena asked hesitantly.
Damian looked at Leah, who was watching him from behind Elena’s shoulder with those big, curious blue-gray eyes.
"If you walk out of those gates tonight," Damian said quietly, "where will you go? To a studio apartment on a waitress's wage? Hiding from the shadow of my enemies who will inevitably find out that the Caruso heir has been removed from the house?"
Elena’s jaw set. "I managed for two years!"
"You managed in grief, believing your daughter was dead!" Damian countered softly. "Now she is alive. And whether you like it or not, Elena... the entire underworld believes Leah Caruso is my daughter and my only heir. If my rivals learn she is no longer under my protection, she becomes a target."
Elena felt a cold spike of fear strike her heart. She knew he was right. The Caruso name was a double-edged sword—it brought immense wealth, but it attracted bloodthirsty predators.
"Then what are you proposing?" Elena asked, her voice trembling.
May you like
Damian stood up, stepping toward them until he stood right beside the bed.
"Stay here," Damian said. "Not as a prisoner. Not as a waitress. As her mother. Stay in this house, under my guards, with my wealth and my protection... until I clean this blood off my name and make the world safe for her."
