Chapter 6 - The Lion’s Den

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was lined with black velvet drapes and lit by massive crystal chandeliers.

Sitting around a massive oval oak table were twenty men—the bosses and senior lieutenants of the five major syndicate families controlling the Midwest.

At the head of the table sat Lorenzo Caruso—a broad, barrel-chested man in his late fifties with slicked-back white hair and a thick gold ring on his pinky finger.

"Damian Caruso has proven himself unfit!" Lorenzo slammed his heavy hand onto the mahogany table, his voice booming through the room. "He has brought shame to the Caruso name! Yesterday, he caused a public riot in his own restaurant over a waitress! He is hiding a child whose parentage is questioned, while our shipping ports in Indiana are under federal investigation!"

The other bosses murmured among themselves, exchanging calculative glances.

"Where is Damian now, Lorenzo?" asked an older boss from New York. "He was summoned two hours ago."

"He is hiding in his fortress!" Lorenzo sneered, standing up. "Because he knows he no longer has the support of this council! I move that we strip Damian of his title as Capo dei Capi and—"

The heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the ballroom shattered inward.

The loud CRACK echoed like a cannon shot.

Two of Lorenzo’s bodyguards standing near the entrance were hurled backward as six of Damian’s elite enforcers swept into the room, submachine guns held at low-ready positions, locking down every exit in five seconds flat.

Through the heavy smoke of the kicked-in doors walked Damian Caruso.

He looked magnificent and terrifying. He wore a custom three-piece black suit, a blood-red silk tie, and an expression of pure, predatory dominance.

Slid through his left arm was Elena Rossi.

She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue silk gown that fitted her slender frame perfectly. Her chestnut hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, revealing her long, graceful neck. Hanging from her throat was a magnificent diamond necklace from the Caruso vault. She walked with her head held high, showing zero fear before twenty of the most dangerous men in America.

Behind them walked Lev, carrying a heavy steel briefcase.

"Lorenzo," Damian’s voice sliced through the ballroom like a razor blade. "I hear you were speaking in my seat."

Lorenzo’s face turned bright red. "Damian! You dare bring weapons to a High Council meeting?! You dare bring your... your waitress into this sacred room?!"

Damian didn't answer with words. He walked straight up the center aisle, pulling out the grand leather armchair at the head of the table. He gently guided Elena to sit down beside him before taking his seat at the head of the Syndicate.

The twenty bosses sat frozen, mesmerized by the sheer, unyielding aura of power radiating from Damian.

"This woman," Damian announced, his voice reverberating off the gold-leaf ceiling, "is Dr. Elena Rossi. She is a graduate of the University of Zurich, the mother of my child, and the future matriarch of the Caruso family."

Gasps erupted around the table.

Lorenzo laughed loudly, a hysterical, nervous sound. "Future matriarch?! She was serving pasta in your restaurant two days ago! She is a nobody! A fraud!"

"Lev," Damian commanded softly.

Lev stepped forward, slamming the heavy steel briefcase onto the mahogany table. He flipped the latches open and pulled out a stack of stamped legal and medical documents, sliding them across the smooth wood to every boss at the table.

"These," Damian said coldly, "are the genomic DNA reports certified by St. Jude's Hospital proving Elena Rossi is the biological mother of my daughter, Leah Caruso. Alongside them are the bank statements proving that my uncle, Lorenzo Caruso, transferred four million dollars to Dr. Adrian Keller in Zurich three years ago."

Lorenzo froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "What... what nonsense is this?!"

"It was not my late wife who initiated the kidnapping of my daughter," Damian revealed, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper that chilled the air in the room. "It was my uncle, Lorenzo. He paid Dr. Keller to steal Elena's child and hand her to Sofia, knowing that if the truth ever came out, it would destroy my marriage, shatter my reputation, and give him the leverage to murder me and take my throne."

The bosses around the table looked down at the bank statements, then turned their heads slowly to glare at Lorenzo with pure disgust. In the world of the Syndicate, striking at a boss's child was an unpardonable sin—a violation of the ancient blood laws.

"You... you traitorous snake," the senior boss from New York growled, standing up and reaching for his jacket.

"No," Damian raised one hand, stopping the boss. "Lorenzo belongs to me."

Damian stood up slowly, stepping around the table until he stood right behind Lorenzo’s chair. He leaned down, placing his hands on the back of Lorenzo’s leather seat.

"You tried to steal my blood, Lorenzo," Damian whispered into his uncle's ear. "You tried to break my child's mind. You thought you could hide behind my wife's grave."

"Damian... please... we're family..." Lorenzo stammered, his eyes wide with absolute, primal terror.

"Family doesn't steal children," Damian purred.

He gestured to Lev. Two guards grabbed Lorenzo by his arms, dragging him out through the side doors of the ballroom. His frantic screams echoed down the corridor until the heavy soundproof doors slammed shut.

Damian turned back to the remaining nineteen bosses, resting his hands casually on the edge of the mahogany table.

"Is there anyone else on this council," Damian asked smoothly, "who wishes to question my daughter’s bloodline or my choice of a wife?"

May you like

Silence. Absolute, total submission filled the room. Every boss lowered their head in respect to the undisputed King of Chicago.

Damian turned to Elena, extending his hand. She took it, her fingers intertwining with his, and together they walked out of the lion's den.
