Chapter 9 - The Battle at the Docks

Midnight at Pier 42 on Lake Michigan was cold, wet, and enveloped in thick white fog.

Massive shipping containers were stacked three stories high, casting long, dark shadows across the wet concrete pier. The sound of waves crashing against the iron pylons echoed through the misty air.

Standing near the edge of the pier was Don Carmine Rossi—a tall, sleek man in a fur-trimmed coat, flanked by twenty heavily armed men carrying assault rifles. Beside him stood Dr. Adrian Keller, trembling in a soaked trench coat, his eyes wild with fear.

A line of five black armored SUVs pulled onto the pier, their headlights cutting bright white beams through the fog.

The doors opened simultaneously.

Forty Moretti and Caruso enforcers stepped out, taking tactical positions behind the vehicles. From the middle SUV stepped Damian Caruso, dressed in a long black leather coat, walking calmly toward the center of the pier.

Beside him walked Elena, wearing a dark coat, her posture straight, her eyes fixed on the man who had ordered her baby stolen.

"Damian!" Carmine Rossi boomed, stepping forward with a cold smile. "You brought the waitress to a blood meeting? How poetic."

"Carmine," Damian said smoothly, stopping ten paces away. "You brought a corrupt doctor to a war."

Dr. Keller shrank behind Carmine’s bodyguards, sweating profusely despite the freezing cold wind. "Carmine, please! Just give him the money! Let me leave!"

"Shut up, Keller," Carmine snapped. He looked at Elena with sneering contempt. "Elena Rossi. You were supposed to starve in Switzerland. My brother Julian was a fool to waste his time on a common girl like you."

Elena took a step forward, showing no fear before twenty raised rifles. "You stole my daughter, Carmine. You paid a doctor to tell me she died in my arms!"

"Your daughter is a Rossi!" Carmine thundered. "She carries the blood of the New York throne! She represents fifty million dollars in trust funds that belong to my family! Hand her over, Damian, or we turn this pier into a graveyard!"

Damian let out a low, dark laugh. It was a terrifying sound that made the hair on the back of Carmine’s neck stand up.

"You think you can come into my city, onto my docks, and threaten my daughter?" Damian asked softly.

He raised his right hand.

Above them, on top of the shipping containers, searchlights suddenly clicked on, blinding Carmine’s men in brilliant white glare. Thirty red laser sights danced across the chests of every single Rossi enforcer on the pier.

Carmine’s smile evaporated. "What... what is this?!"

"This is my city, Carmine," Damian purred. "You entered a trap the moment your jet landed at O’Hare."

Damian motioned with his fingers.

CLICK-CLACK.

The sound of forty weapons charging echoed through the foggy pier.

Carmine’s bodyguards immediately dropped their weapons to the wet concrete, raising their hands in surrender, refusing to die for a stolen child.

Carmine stood alone, his face pale, looking around at the red laser dots covering his chest.

Elena walked straight up to Dr. Adrian Keller. The cowardly doctor dropped to his knees on the wet pavement, weeping frantically.

"Elena! Please!" Keller sobbed. "Sofia forced me! Carmine paid me! I had no choice!"

Elena looked down at the man who had torn her heart out three years ago. She didn't hit him. She didn't scream. She reached out and pulled the silver cross hanging from his neck, snapping the chain, and dropped it into the sea below.

"You are no doctor," Elena said coldly. "You are a monster."

Damian stepped up beside her, grabbing Carmine Rossi by his silk collar, pulling him inches from his face.

"Listen to me carefully, Carmine," Damian growled. "You will surrender all claims to the Rossi trust. You will sign over Julian's entire estate to Elena Rossi. And if I ever see your face in Chicago again... I will feed you to the fish in this lake."

Carmine swallowed hard, his arrogance completely shattered. "Agreed... I agree!"

"Take them away," Damian ordered Lev. "Hand Keller over to Interpol for human trafficking. Let him spend the rest of his life in a Swiss prison."

As the enforcers dragged Carmine and Keller away, Damian turned to Elena.

The cold wind blew her chestnut hair across her face. Damian reached out, gently brushing the strands away, framing her face with his warm hands.

"It’s over, Elena," Damian whispered. "The shadows are gone. You and Leah are safe forever."

Elena looked into his dark, fierce eyes, feeling an overwhelming wave of love and gratitude wash through her soul. She leaned in, pressing her lips against his in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future beneath the Chicago fog.
