Chapter 3 - The Gathering Shadow

For two hours, the powerful Gabriel Romano built block towers, evaluated watercolor paintings, and let Lily stick a glittering purple star sticker directly onto the lapel of his ten-thousand-dollar suit jacket.

When the event concluded, the parents filed out in hushed, intimidated silence, giving Gabriel a wide berth.

Outside on the sidewalk, the autumn wind was picking up, blowing dry leaves across the pavement. The black Bentley was idling at the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the grey sky.

Lily was exhausted, her head resting heavily against Gabriel’s shoulder as he carried her effortlessly toward the car. Her tiny arm was wrapped around his neck, Mr. Fluffles tucked beneath her chin.

Claire walked beside them, still in a state of complete shock.

"Mr. Romano," Claire said, her voice shaking slightly as they reached the vehicle. "I... I don't even know what to say. You didn't have to do this. You have a business to run. Important meetings..."

"Nothing I had planned today was more important than this, Claire," Gabriel said quietly, looking down at the sleeping girl in his arms.

He gently handed Lily over to Claire, taking extreme care to ensure the child was wrapped securely in her jacket.

Claire took her daughter, her skin brushing against Gabriel’s hands. A sudden, electric warmth surged between them, making Claire’s breath catch in her throat. She looked up into his gray eyes and saw something she had never noticed before: beneath his cold, formidable exterior lay a deep, aching tenderness.

"Thank you," Claire whispered, her eyes shining. "You saved her heart today."

"She saved mine three days ago," Gabriel replied softly.

Before Claire could ask what he meant, Frank opened the rear door of the Bentley. "Gabriel. We have a problem."

Gabriel’s gentle expression vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, lethal sharpness. "What is it?"

Frank held up a secure tablet. "Ryan Cole just showed up at the estate in Bedford. He tried to force his way past the front gatehouse. He’s demanding to see Claire and Lily, and he brought two low-level enforcers from the O’Malley crew with him."

Claire went pale, her knees trembling. "Ryan...? How does he know where I work? Why would he bring enforcers?!"

Gabriel stepped between Claire and the street, his broad shoulders blocking her completely from view.

"Because Ryan Cole owes forty thousand dollars to the O’Malley crew," Gabriel stated coldly. "And he told them he could get the money from the wealthy man whose house his ex-wife cleans."

Claire gasped, clutching Lily tighter against her chest. "Oh God... Ryan sold us out..."

Gabriel looked at Claire. His face was set in granite, but his eyes were filled with absolute, unyielding protection.

"Get in the car, Claire," Gabriel commanded smoothly, holding the Bentley’s door open himself.

"Mr. Romano... I can't involve you in this!" Claire cried, tears of panic brimming in her eyes. "These men are dangerous! The O'Malley crew..."

Gabriel let out a soft, dark, terrifying laugh that sent a shiver straight down Claire’s spine.

"Claire," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer, absolute authority. "The O'Malley crew operates in this city because I allow them to operate. Get in the car. It’s time you learned whose house you’ve been cleaning."
