Chapter 4 - The Gates of Bedford

The black Bentley glided up the winding, forested drive of the Bedford estate forty minutes later.

Outside the massive iron gates, a rusty red sedan was parked sideways, blocking the entrance. Standing near the gatehouse were three men.

One was Ryan Cole. He was wearing a rumpled leather jacket, his hair greasy, his face flushed with nervous sweat. Flanking him were two burly men in heavy coats with suspicious bulges near their waistlines—O'Malley crew enforcers.

The estate’s gate guard, a former military contractor wearing a tactical vest beneath his uniform, stood calmly behind the reinforced glass, holding a radio.

When the heavy black Bentley pulled up behind the red sedan, the air instantly turned electric.

"Stay in the car," Gabriel told Claire, his tone leaving zero room for argument.

"Gabriel, please be careful!" Claire begged, her voice cracking as she held the waking Lily in the backseat.

Gabriel didn't answer. He adjusted his silk tie, opened the door, and stepped out into the crisp autumn air. Frank stepped out right behind him, his hand tucked casually inside his jacket.

Ryan Cole turned around, adjusting his jacket nervously as he recognized the owner of the mansion.

"Are you Romano?" Ryan called out, trying to sound tough in front of the two enforcers. "I'm Ryan Cole. Lily's father. I know my kid is in that car. And I know Claire’s been working here. We need to talk about a financial settlement!"

Gabriel walked toward them slowly. He didn't rush. He didn't raise his voice. He moved with the terrifying, effortless grace of a lion approaching three stray dogs.

"A financial settlement?" Gabriel echoed, his voice cool and pleasant.

"Yeah!" Ryan rasped, stepping forward. "Claire owes me money from our old apartment lease. And since she’s living off your charity, you’re gonna pay her debts. Fifty grand. Right now. Or these boys here from O'Malley will make sure your shipping docks in Brooklyn have a very bad week."

One of the O'Malley enforcers stepped forward, sneering. "You heard him, old man. Pay up or—"

The enforcer never finished his sentence.

Frank moved like a striking viper. He closed the distance in half a second, grabbed the enforcer’s wrist, twisted it until the bone popped with a sickening CRACK, and slammed the man’s face directly onto the hood of the red sedan. The enforcer’s gun clattered onto the gravel.

The second enforcer reached for his belt, but Gabriel didn't even flinch.

Gabriel took one step forward, seized the second enforcer by his throat with his bare left hand, and lifted the two-hundred-pound man off his feet, pinning him hard against the iron gate.

The enforcer choked, his eyes bulging in sheer terror as he looked into Gabriel Romano’s gray eyes.

"Do you know who I am?" Gabriel whispered softly into the enforcer's ear.

The enforcer swallowed hard down his crushed windpipe, nodding frantically. Every low-level thug in New York knew that face. They knew the Romano family.

"Go back to O'Malley," Gabriel instructed gently. "Tell him that if any of his men set foot within five miles of Westchester County ever again, I will personally buy his mortgage, burn his club to the ground, and bury him beneath Pier 42."

Gabriel released his grip. The enforcer collapsed onto the gravel, gasping for air, grabbing his unconscious partner, and scrambling back into the red sedan.

Ryan Cole stood frozen on the driveway, his face draining of every drop of color. He wet his lips, taking three panicked steps backward. "Wait... wait... I didn't know... I thought you were just some rich corporate guy..."

Gabriel turned his gaze onto Ryan Cole.

The air around them seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"You left a pregnant woman four years ago," Gabriel said, stepping toward Ryan until he was towering over the younger man. "You ruined her credit. You brought loan sharks to her doorstep. And forty-five minutes ago, you broke a four-year-old girl's heart because you were 'too busy' to sit on a plastic chair for an hour."

"I... I'm her father!" Ryan squeaked, backed against the cold iron bars of the gate. "You can't touch me! I have parental rights!"

Gabriel reached out, his long fingers casually gripping Ryan’s jacket lapels, pulling him close until their noses were inches apart.

"You surrendered those rights the day you made Lily cry," Gabriel whispered, his voice a chilling promises from the underworld. "You owe forty thousand dollars to O'Malley. As of five minutes ago, I bought that debt. You now owe forty thousand dollars to me."

Ryan gasped, his knees buckling in sheer terror.

"Here is what is going to happen, Mr. Cole," Gabriel continued smoothly. "You are going to sign a full, legally binding surrender of all parental rights to Lily Bennett before five o'clock today. In exchange, I will forgive your debt. If you refuse, or if you ever approach Claire or Lily again..."

Gabriel leaned in closer.

"...I will introduce you to the bottom of the East River."

Ryan nodded frantically, tears of horror streaming down his face. "I'll sign! I'll sign anything! Just don't kill me!"

"Frank," Gabriel said, letting go of Ryan’s jacket like he was discarding a piece of trash. "Escort Mr. Cole to my legal team in Manhattan. Make sure the paperwork is airtight."

"With pleasure, Boss," Frank grinned, grabbing Ryan by the collar and hauling him toward a secondary security vehicle.

Gabriel turned around. He adjusted his cuffs, smoothed his charcoal jacket, and walked back toward the black Bentley.

Inside the car, Claire was staring through the tinted glass, her hands pressed against her mouth, her heart pounding like a drum.

Gabriel opened the door and sat beside her.

"Is... is he gone?" Claire whispered, her voice trembling.

May you like

"He won't ever bother you or Lily again, Claire," Gabriel said softly, reaching out to gently touch Lily’s sleeping head. "You are safe here."

Claire looked into his eyes, seeing the ruthless crime boss who had just dismantled three men without breaking a sweat, and realized that for the first time in four years, she and her daughter were truly protected.
