Chapter 6 - The Feast of Roses

Two months passed in a blur of radical transformation.

The dark, gloomy Bedford mansion had officially come alive.

The locked room on the second floor remained open, but it was no longer a place of grief. With Gabriel’s blessing, Lily was allowed to play in Emma’s old room, filling it with new laughter, fresh drawings, and the bright energy of a child who knew she was loved.

Claire had officially resigned from her cleaning duties. At Gabriel’s insistence, she and Lily had moved out of their cramped apartment in Queens and into the grand guest suite on the second floor of the estate. Claire was now managing the administrative branch of the Romano Children’s Health Trust—a multi-million-dollar charity Gabriel had established in memory of Emma.

And the bond between Gabriel and Lily had grown into something extraordinary.

Every evening at six o'clock, no matter how intense his business meetings were, Gabriel returned home. He would shed his jacket, roll up his sleeves, and sit on the rug while Lily taught him the "proper" way to serve plastic tea to Mr. Fluffles.

One chilly December evening, the estate was decorated for the upcoming holidays. Enormous pine garlands draped the grand staircase, and a twenty-foot Christmas tree stood in the foyer, sparkling with golden lights and silver ornaments.

In the formal dining room, a long mahogany table was set for a quiet family dinner.

Lily sat in a high chair near Gabriel, vigorously coloring a picture of a reindeer.

"Mr. Gabriel," Lily announced, pointing her brown crayon at his face. "You have silver hair right here like a snowy tree."

Gabriel paused, a small smile brushing his lips. "Is that a compliment, Lily?"

"Yes," Lily nodded sagely. "Snowy trees are pretty."

Claire sat across from him, wearing a dark green velvet dress that highlighted her warm eyes and graceful figure. She laughed softly, setting down her fork. "Lily, let Mr. Romano eat his soup."

"Gabriel," he corrected smoothly, looking across the table at Claire, his gray eyes warm with affection. "I’ve told you three times this week, Claire. In this house, my name is Gabriel."

Claire flushed slightly, a beautiful pink rising on her cheeks. "It’s hard to break old habits."

"Then let's make new ones," Gabriel said softly.

He stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and held out his hand to Claire.

Claire looked at his hand, then up at his face. She placed her fingers in his warm palm.

Gabriel led her toward the tall French doors opening onto the heated, covered terrace overlooking the snow-dusted gardens.

Outside, the cool winter air was crisp, but the terrace heaters kept them comfortably warm. The sky above was a deep, velvet blue filled with glittering stars.

Gabriel turned to face Claire, holding both of her hands in his.

"Two months ago, Claire," Gabriel began, his voice deep and resonant, "I was a dead man walking through an empty house. I thought my life was over. I thought I was destined to spend the rest of my days in the cold."

He stepped closer, pulling her slightly toward his chest.

"You and Lily didn't just clean my house, Claire. You saved my life. You brought light back into a place that had been dark for ten years."

Claire’s breath hitched, her eyes sparkling in the moonlight. "Gabriel... you saved us too."

"I don't want to just protect you, Claire," Gabriel whispered, reaching up to gently outline her jaw with his long fingers. "I want to love you. I want to build a real family with you, if you’ll let me."

Claire didn't hesitate. She stepped into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his broad neck, and lifted her face to his.

"I already love you, Gabriel," she whispered.

Gabriel brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed their hearts together forever under the winter stars.
