Chapter 4 - The Open Gate

Spring returned to New York with a brilliant, unyielding warmth, melting the last remnants of winter from the iron gates of the Oyster Bay estate.
The war with the Russos was a distant memory, buried under new treaties and a restructured commission that left Dante Marino firmly at the head of the table, but with a renewed sense of absolute authority and peace. The newspapers still whispered about the mysterious underworld king and the quiet, elegant woman who walked by his side, but inside the mansion, labels and rumors mattered very little.
In the sunlit conservatory, surrounded by blooming orchids and the bright, melodic laughter of Rosa, Clara sat reading from a fresh paperback novel. Her physical therapy practice had evolved into a foundation, funded discreetly by the Marino syndicate, providing free medical care to families crushed by hospital debt across the city.
Footsteps echoed softly on the stone tiles, and a familiar, comforting weight settled beside her on the wrought-iron bench. Dante reached over, taking her hand in his, his thumb tracing the faint, silvery scar on her wrist where the first bullet had grazed her skin months ago.
"You're staring," Clara murmured with a soft smile, not looking up from her book.

"I have spent my entire life surrounded by enemies, Clara," Dante replied, his voice rich with a deep, unshakable contentment. "Forgive me if I spend every remaining second making sure the only woman who ever saved my soul is actually real."
Clara finally closed the book, turned her head, and met his dark, adoring eyes without a shred of hesitation or fear. She leaned in, resting her head against his shoulder as the spring breeze rustled through the garden outside, carrying the sweet scent of new beginnings and a happily ever after that had been fought for, bled for, and won.
