Chapter 8 - The Lion’s Wrath

Clara fell back into a treatment room, locking the heavy oak door behind her. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She was no longer the helpless therapist from months ago; she was a woman who had bled, survived, and learned how the world’s most dangerous men operated.
She grabbed a heavy stainless-steel IV pole and positioned herself behind the door frame, out of the line of sight.
Outside, a mercenary fired three heavy rounds through the lock, kicking the door wide open. As the first man stepped into the room, his weapon raised, Clara swung the IV pole with all the force in her body, striking him directly across the side of his helmet and knocking his night-vision goggles askew.
Before his partner could raise his rifle, a shadow burst through the shattered window behind them.
It was Dante.
Driven by a primal, terrifying fury, he had scaled the exterior fire escape directly into the burning building. He didn't look like a mob boss; he looked like an elemental force of destruction. In a flash of brutal, blinding speed, he disarmed the second mercenary, slamming him against the wall with enough power to crack the plaster, before neutralizing the third with two point-blank shots from his sidearm.
The room fell quiet, save for the crackle of distant flames and the heavy, ragged breathing of two people who had faced death together once again.
Dante dropped his weapon, stepped over the unconscious mercenaries, and gathered Clara into his arms with a force that nearly took her breath away. He buried his face in her hair, trembling violently as he checked her for injuries.
"You're okay," he choked out, his voice raw with an emotion so deep it sounded like a sob. "You're okay. I have you."

Clara wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, smelling the soot and rain on his jacket. "I knew you’d come," she whispered softly into his shoulder. "I knew you wouldn't let them take this away from us."
"Never," Dante swore, pulling back to look into her eyes with an absolute, terrifying conviction. "This ends tonight, Clara. Every last one of them."
