Chapter 2 - THE NARRATIVE WAR

By eight o'clock the following morning, the high-society tabloids and financial columns were already on fire.
Camille Harcourt was not a woman to lose without a fight. Sitting in the sunlit parlor of the Harcourt estate, sipping black coffee, she watched as her public relations team drafted a scathing narrative. The headlines read: Tragedy at the Winter Garden: Mentally Unstable Mother Sabotages Son’s Betrothal.
The story claimed that Eleanor Vance, overwhelmed by dementia and jealousy over her son's social ascent, had staged a public breakdown, falling into the fountain and attacking Camille. It framed Camille as the victim of a tragic, low-class delusion.
"It's perfect," Camille murmured, adjusting her silk robe. "Make sure the Daily Chronicle runs it on the front page. Ethan will realize he can't ruin my reputation without ruining his own."
Two miles away, inside the sleek penthouse atop the Vance Global tower, Ethan was preparing breakfast for his mother. Eleanor sat by the floor-to-ceiling glass, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. The bruises on her wrists from where Camille had shoved her were already turning a deep purple.
"Ethan," Eleanor said softly, looking at her son. "You spent years building Vance Global. If you destroy your connection with the Harcourts, the syndicate investors will pull out. Don't ruin your dream because of an old woman's bad day."
Ethan set a plate of toast and poached eggs before her. He knelt beside her chair, taking her weathered, calloused hands into his own.
"Mom," he said gently, "my dream was never a corporate logo. My dream was ensuring that no one could ever make you feel small again. You traded your health, your youth, and your pride so I could go to Ivy League schools. If I let a spoiled heiress push you into a fountain to protect my social standing, I’m not a man—I’m a coward."
His phone buzzed on the mahogany table. It was Arthur Vance, his lead corporate strategist. Ethan stood up and answered, pressing the phone to his ear.
"Ethan, the Harcourt press leak is live," Arthur reported grimly. "Camille’s father, Julian Harcourt, is already calling our board members. He’s threatening to block our maritime regulatory permits if you don't issue a public apology and reinstate their credit line."
"Good," Ethan replied, his eyes turning to cold steel as he stared out over the city skyline. "He took the bait. Deploy Project Glasshouse."
"Are you sure?" Arthur hesitated. "If we execute Glasshouse, it completely exposes Julian Harcourt's offshore accounts. It will wipe out 40% of their family holding value within three hours."
"Julian Harcourt thought he could use his daughter to leash my company," Ethan said softly. "Expose every shell company. Freeze their liquidity. Let's see how much influence political connections have when you can't pay your legal council."
By noon, the tide flipped violently.
Vance Global didn't issue a press release defending Eleanor. Instead, Ethan released the raw, unedited 4K security footage from the winter garden straight to every national news network. The high-definition video clearly showed Camille leaning in, uttering her cruel words, and deliberately shoving the frail older woman backward into the water while her friends laughed.
The public outrage was instantaneous. "Her cheap clothes were destroying the aesthetic" became the top trending quote worldwide, sparking massive backlash against the Harcourt family and their luxury brands.

Simultaneously, the financial markets reacted to the sudden freeze on Harcourt credit. Shares of Harcourt Enterprises plunged 35% in afternoon trading.
Inside her mansion, Camille watched the stock ticker turn a horrifying shade of crimson. Her phone began ringing incessantly—not from sympathetic socialites, but from frantic board members and angry creditors.
