Chapter 3 - CRACKS IN THE FACADE

The downfall of an empire is rarely quiet, but for the Harcourt family, it felt like an avalanche.
Within forty-eight hours of the fountain incident, Camille found herself completely isolated. Her phone, which usually buzzed with invitations to galas and charity dinners, went completely dead.
She drove to the exclusive Saint Jude Country Club, hoping to seek comfort among her inner circle. But as she stepped into the terrace lounge, the chatter died down instantly. Isabelle Crane, the very friend who had laughed beside her at the fountain, quickly gathered her purse and walked away without making eye contact.
"Isabelle!" Camille called out, striding over and catching her former friend by the arm. "Are you ignoring me?"
Isabelle pulled her arm back as if Camille’s touch were contagious. "Camille, my father lost two million dollars this morning because your family’s stock crashed! My parents banned me from being seen with you. You pushed an old lady into a pool on camera! Do you know how toxic you are right now?"
"It was a mistake!" Camille hissed, her immaculate fingernails digging into her palm. "Ethan is just throwing a temporary temper tantrum. He’ll come back. He needs our political capital for his shipping merger!"
"He doesn't need you, Camille," Isabelle scoffed cold-heartedly. "Haven't you seen the news? Ethan just bypassed your father entirely. He brought in an international European consortium to back his deal. You're ruined."
Isabelle turned and walked away, leaving Camille standing alone under the gaze of whispering onlookers.
Meanwhile, at the Vance Global headquarters, Ethan sat in a high-backed leather chair, reviewing financial documents. Sitting across from him was Marcus Vance, Ethan’s long-estranged uncle and the head of Vance Security Logistics.
"Ethan, you dug deep into the Harcourt balance sheets," Marcus said, laying a thick manila folder on the desk. "You were just looking to cut off their credit, but our forensic accountants found something much worse."
Ethan opened the folder. His brows furrowed as he scanned lines of hidden wire transfers dating back twenty years. "What is this?"
"Twenty years ago, when your father died and your family lost the original family farm and logistics yard, you thought it was bad luck and debt," Marcus explained grimly. "It wasn't. Julian Harcourt was the receiver who managed your father’s estate. He intentionally doctored the bankruptcy valuation, bought your father's land for pennies on the dollar, and used it as collateral to launch Harcourt Enterprises."
Ethan's blood ran cold. He stared at the signature at the bottom of a fraudulent foreclosure document: Julian Harcourt.
"My mother worked three jobs to pay off debt that wasn't even real?" Ethan’s voice dropped to a quiet, dangerous whisper.
"Julian Harcourt stole your family’s legacy," Marcus confirmed. "He built his wealth on your mother's suffering. Camille pushing her into that fountain wasn't an isolated incident of cruelty—it was the continuation of a decades-old contempt."

Ethan slowly closed the folder. The grief and anger that had simmered in his heart since childhood coalesced into an unyielding resolve.
"They didn't just disrespect my mother," Ethan said, his voice deadly calm. "They robbed her. And now, I’m going to take back every single cent, with interest."
