Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

The evening air was cool and crisp as we stepped out onto the back patio after dinner. The stars shone brightly above the Dallas skyline, casting a silver glow across the sprawling lawn and the silent, peaceful gardens.
The outdoor kitchen where my nightmare had once unfolded was now clean, quiet, and bathed in soft amber lighting. There were no oversized pots, no caustic detergents, and no hostile relatives breathing down my neck.
Julian slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as we looked out over the dark horizon.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Cross," Julian whispered, pressing his lips against my hair.
I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder. "I was just thinking about how strange life is. If you hadn't come home early that day... if you hadn't walked through that front door right when you did... I don't know how much longer I could have held on."
Julian tightened his grip, his arm fierce and protective. "You never have to hold on alone again, Emma. The past is buried, the debt is settled, and every single person who tried to break us is gone."

"I know," I murmured, closing my eyes and breathing in the cool night air. "And for the first time in five years... I feel completely safe."
We stood there together in the quiet sanctuary of our home, watching the stars above us, ready to write the next chapter of a life that was finally, truly ours.
