Chapter 4 - The Purge

Within fifteen minutes, the luxury cars parked in our circular driveway were doors-slamming, engines revving, and tires squealing against the asphalt as my husband’s family fled in absolute disgrace.

The grand mansion, which had been echoing with obnoxious laughter and arrogant boasts just half an hour earlier, fell into an eerie, profound silence. The catering staff had quietly packed up their stations and slipped out the back service gates, terrified of the explosive anger radiating from the master of the house.

I stood alone in the center of the kitchen island, staring down at my blistered hands. The sting of the detergent was fading, replaced by a dull, throbbing ache.

Footsteps approached softly. Julian walked into the kitchen, holding a first-aid kit he had retrieved from the master bathroom master bath. He didn't say a word. He pulled up a stool, sat down gently in front of me, and motioned for me to place my hands on his knees.

With agonizing gentleness, Julian opened the kit, took out a sterile wipe, and began cleaning the chemical residue from my skin. His hands were warm, steady, and calloused from years of working in his restaurant kitchens, but right now, his touch was as tender as a prayer.

"I'm sorry," Julian whispered, his voice cracking. A single tear broke free from his dark lashes and traced a path down his cheek. "I was so blind, Emma. I was so busy building an empire out there, believing their lies, thinking I was securing our future... while they were destroying the only person who actually mattered to me."

I looked down at him, my own eyes blurring with tears. For five years, I had prayed for this exact validation—prayed that Julian would see the truth, that he would defend me, that he would choose me over them.

"You didn't know," I choked out, my voice raspy from hours of exhaustion and swallowed tears. "They lied to you every single day, Julian. They made me feel like I was crazy... like I was the problem."

"Never again," Julian vowed fiercely, taking my bandaged hands and pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my knuckles. "They are out of our lives completely. Every bank account they had access to has been frozen as of ten minutes ago. Their corporate allowances, their luxury cars leased under my business credit, their downtown condos—all of it is being revoked tonight."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, velvet box he had carried all the way from overseas. He popped the lid open, revealing a breathtaking diamond necklace that caught the kitchen light.

"I bought this five years ago in Paris," Julian whispered, sliding the necklace gently around my neck. "I told myself I wouldn't give it to you until our restaurant empire was fully established and we had everything we ever dreamed of. But I realize now... we didn't need an empire. We just needed each other."

I let out a shaky breath, a genuine smile finally breaking through the pain. I leaned forward, resting my forehead against his shoulder as he wrapped his arms tightly around my waist, holding me as if he were afraid I might vanish into thin air.
