Chapter 9 - The Anniversary Dinner

One year to the day after Julian walked through the front door and caught his family exploiting me in the outdoor kitchen, we hosted a very different kind of gathering.
There were no arrogant relatives, no fake smiles, no expensive champagne poured by people who despised us.
Instead, the long mahogany dining table was surrounded by our closest friends—loyal colleagues, trusted business partners, and kind individuals who had stood by us through the darkest chapters of our lives.
I wore a stunning emerald silk dress, the diamond necklace Julian had bought in Paris resting gracefully against my collarbone. My hands, once raw and blistered from chemical burns, were smooth and healed, resting comfortably over the stem of a crystal wine glass.
Julian stood at the head of the table, tapping his glass gently with a silver spoon to get everyone's attention. The room quieted down, and he looked around the table before his eyes locked onto mine with an expression of boundless love.
"A year ago today, I walked back into this house believing I was returning to a sanctuary," Julian began, his voice warm and steady. "Instead, I walked into a nightmare of my own making—a nightmare born from my own blindness, my misplaced trust, and my failure to protect the person who gave me everything when I had nothing."
He paused, looking directly at me as a hush fell over the room.
"Emma believed in me when my name meant nothing, when my pockets were empty, and when our future was just a desperate prayer," Julian continued, emotion thickening his voice. "She endured unimaginable cruelty under my own roof, protected my family's honor even when they were tearing her apart, and never once stopped loving me through the distance. Today, I don't just celebrate our anniversary or our restaurant empire. I celebrate her strength, her forgiveness, and the fact that we finally built the home we always dreamed of—a home built on truth, loyalty, and unbreakable love."

Everyone at the table raised their glasses, smiling warmly.
I stood up, walked around the table, and wrapped my arms around Julian’s neck, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek as our friends applauded.
